England
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: semi-final
Euro 92: group stage
Euro 88: group stage
Fortunate to qualify for the finals, England have been granted few favours with Germany, Romania and Portugal as their group rivals. But having flirted with elimination with Poland failing to secure the point they needed against Sweden and squeezing through a scrappy play-off against Scotland, England can at least dream of repeating their position of semi-finalists four years ago. It is likely to remain a dream.

France
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: semi-final
Euro 92: group stage
Euro 88: did not qualify
For much of their qualifying campaign, France performed like anything but world champions and eventually needed a 3-2 win against Iceland to avoid contesting a play-off. But they seem to have turned the corner with new coach Robert Lemerre at last finding his feet and his voice.

Italy
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: group stage
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: semi-final
Italy's path through the qualifiers mirrored their record at past European Championships - strangely inconsistent. They failed to beat Belarus - twice - lost at home to Denmark and could manage only a draw with Switzerland. Little wonder they used 30 players in the process.

Denmark
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: group stage
Euro 92: winner
Euro 88: group stage
It will take more than a fairytale to see Denmark succeed at Euro 2000, but their path to the finals showed they have lost nothing of their love for the dramatic. The surprise winners eight years ago recovered from securing just two points from their first four games to overcoming Italy away in their final group game to qualify.

Germany
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: winners
Euro 92: runners-up
Euro 88: semi-final
Despite their undoubted pedigree, Germany travel to the Low Countries defending more than their crown. The three-time World and European Champions have been on the wane for some time but will be out to silence the profits of doom who went to work the moment they were eliminated from France 98 in the quarter-finals.

Spain
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: quarter-final
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: group stage
The most impressive team in the qualifiers, Spain scored 42 goals in eight games to top their group with something to spare. After losing 3-2 to Cyprus they bounced back with an 8-0 thrashing in the return leg. But to have any chance of finally doing themselves justice they must find a way to eliminate the off days and dispense once and for all with inferior opposition.

Netherlands
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: quarter-final
Euro 92: semi-final
Euro 88: winners
Proven performers in the European Championships and a squad that oozes talent, but have been worryingly ineffective of late, with even their usually blindly loyal supporters rallying against them. With home advantage, however, it is difficult to argue with the bookies who have made them favourites.

Czech Republic
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: runners-up
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: did not qualify
Scored a perfect ten victories out of ten in the qualifiers and are heavily tipped to add to their impressive record in European Championships. Winners in 1976, third place in both 1960 and 1980, and runners-up four years ago, they were the first team to qualify for Euro 2000.

Belgium
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: did not qualify
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: did not qualify
As co-hosts, Belgium earned automatic qualification and seeding but their recent run of 11 games without a win and a poor France 98 spells fear rather than anticipation. Were runners-up in 1980, but failed to qualify for the past three European Championships. There is renewed hope, though, with coach Georges Leekens.

Sweden
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: did not qualify
Euro 92: semi-finals
Euro 88: did not qualify
With the best defensive record in the qualifiers Sweden should be a hard side to beat. But whether they have the firepower to repeat their performance of eight years ago, where they reached the semi-finals, remains to be seen. They conceded one goal in eight qualifiers. At the other end, though, they found the net just ten times. After putting three past Luxembourg, the remaining seven were spread over six wins and a draw.

Romania
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: group stage
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: did not qualify
After remaining undefeated in ten games and conceding just three goals in qualification, Romania looked to be in fine form going into the finals. But within a matter of weeks, their coach and architect of qualification, Victor Piturca, had been sacked and when the draw was made they found themselves grouped with Germany, England and Portugal - hardly the company that leads to predictions of making it to the knockout stage.

Portugal
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: quarter-final
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: did not qualify
Portugal must overcome their reputation as underachievers if they are to mount a serious challenge at Euro 2000. Despite scoring a staggering 15 goals in two games against Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein, they qualified as best runners-up in the group stage. Three quarter-finals and a semi-final in 1984 say less about them than six failed qualification campaigns.

Turkey
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: group stage
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: did not qualify
Have yet to open their European Championship account after failing to find the net in three group games four years ago. But after their part inspired, part stumbling path to the finals of Euro 2000 this could be the stage where they alter their perception as one of Europe's great underachievers.

Norway
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: did not qualify
Euro 92: did not qualify
Euro 88: did not qualify
Deserve every credit for qualifying for the first time in their history, particularly after losing their opening game 3-1 to Latvia. But their presence in the finals is no fluke. A remarkably consistent year saw them remain unbeaten in competitive football.

Slovenia
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: did not qualify
Slovenia have already surpassed expectations by reaching the finals and that, for the moment, should be the extent of their ambitions. Took the footballing world by surprise by reaching the play-offs and then left people speechless by beating Ukraine. Their coach Srecko Katenec speaks confidently that they will not be "cannon fodder". There is little to suggest otherwise.

Yugoslavia
Recent European Championship record:
Euro 96: did not enter
Euro 92: qualified but excluded
Euro 88: did not qualify
Few nations have a prouder European record, having reached the final in 1960 and 1968, and the semi-final in 1976, but their recent history has been one of domestic upheaval and political intervention. Disqualified in 1992, despite qualifying for the finals, and absent four years ago, Yugoslavia could be about to show the footballing world what they were missing.
