Radek Bejbl

Radek Bejbl
To say Bejbl does the donkey-work for the more talented Nedved, Berger and Smicer is slightly unfair, but his defensive work in midfield does allow those three attacking players free rein going forward.

There is no better indication of his worth to the side than the fact that, when he returned to the team for the final three games of qualifying, the Czechs did not concede a single goal.

Although he made his debut aged just 20, he really came of age on the international scene during Euro 96.

He played every game bar the semi against France, for which he was suspended, and even scored in the shock 2-1 win over Italy.

That form, and his displays in taking Slavia Prague to the Uefa Cup semi-finals in the same year, helped get him a move to Atletico Madrid.

It is a measure of his worth that he has remained at so unstable a club and at the heart of so transient a team ever since.
