Who will be the stars of Euro 2000?

With the cream of Europe's footballing talent on show in the Low Countries, who do you think will be the star of the tournament?

Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten stole the show in 1988, Peter Schmeichel was outstanding in 1992 and Patrick Kluivert and Alan Shearer emerged from Euro 96 with their reputations glowing.

But who do you think will come to the fore in the Low Countries? Perhaps this is the platform David Beckham has been looking for to show he can perform as well at international level as he does for Manchester United.

Perhaps Jaap Stam and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will shine above all the other stars on their way to Dutch glory.

It could be a tournament in which experience pays dividends and if so Tony Adams and Laurent Blanc could well scoop player of the tournament.

Or maybe young guns such as Sebastian Deisler, Gianluigi Buffon or even Emile Heskey will emerge from the tournament as world football's hottest property.

So who are you tipping to be the star of Euro 2000?

HAVE YOUR SAY

France and Holland would make thrilling final, with Holland emerging winners. They both have the skill, displine and determination to win.
Ken Onacha, Israel

Zinedine Zidane is and will be the star of Euro 2000.
Khoo E Jiun, Malaysia

Without a doubt the star will be Thierry Henry. He has pace to burn and unbelievable talent.
Nick, England

Until now, the player that has most impressed me is Figo. Italy's own del Piero seems on the way to be completely recovered after playing very few matches this year.
Joaquim de Sousa, Italy

Zlatko Zahovic has been the best player of Euro 2000 so far. He's a great finisher and is a great prospect. Other stand out players are Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Luis Figo and Emile Mpenza who have all impressed me
Ben Johnson, England

I think Alessandro del Piero will shine if he's given the chance and Fabio Cannavaro isn't playing to badly either.
Joe Monastero, England

Figo is definitely the man to watch, he's in exhilarating form. Del Piero cannot be written off, he's hungry for goals and has a point to prove.
Kabi, Lesotho

Zahovic. The new Hagi! The Italian clubs will be lining up for him now.

Daz, Ireland
Without doubt the best player at Euro 2000 is Edgar Davids, with David Beckham not far behind. Beckham is a great player and is my second favourite player behind Davids but until he starts to take people on and use a bit of skill and trickery he will remain second to Davids.
Ryan Sutton, England

I've seen every match so far and both the Mpenza brothers of Belgium and Fiore of Italy have stood out. I think Erik Bakke could be the real star though. He had a brilliant season for Leeds and a superb first game for Norway, inspiring them to victory.
Daniel Skippins, England

Having watched every team play in the competition I will name four players that could take their countries all the way to Euro 2000 success. These stars are Paolo Maldini, Ulf Kirsten, Edgar Davids and Erik Mykland.
Chris Evans, England

Well, after the first round of games, we can say that Figo will be the star of the tournament, if Portugal progress a bit. Some other quality players like Nedved, Beckham and Henry also stood out.
Barry Boesveld, Netherlands

Without doubt David Beckham will be the star of Euro 2000

Raheel Riaz, Fiji
If England survive then without doubt David Beckham will be the star of Euro 2000.
Raheel Riaz, Fiji

Steffen Iversen will be the big surprise of Euro 2000.
Svein Erik Lurdalen, Norway

If Denmark should qualify for the quarter finals, Ebbe Sand will have a good chance to show his goal scoring talent.
Peter, Denmark

With so many top class players on show, it's hard to pick out any individual names. I'm sure the Zidanes, Bergkamps, Del Pieros and others will be prominent, but it's the lesser valued players that hold the key. People like Tore Andre Flo, who in my opinion will be the difference between success and failure for Norway, and players like him including Hakan Sukur, Nedved, Mpenza.
Tom Lowcock, England

The best players will be found in duos: Guardiola/Raul, Owen/Beckham, Kluivert/Davids and Figo/Costa (my predicted semi-finals!!!). Luis Figo will easily be the best player in Europe after Euro2000!!!
Dario Lopez, UK

I think Owen will be the star in Euro 2000. After the injuries he has had he will be raring to show the world what he can do again. Speak to any players in the

The best players will be found in twos

Dario Lopez, UK
world and ask them who they fear the most from the England team, and they will say Michael Owen. They can't handle the pace and if they do, they will leave gaps for Scholes and Shearer to exploit. Owen is the key. I wouldn't be surprised to see him up there with the top scorers. So lets get behind the boys.
Krishan, England

After Raul's recent performances in the Euro Championship how can one not vote for him. But something in my water tells me young Mr Owen might come good with Nicky Barmby supplying through balls and Beckham's crosses creating enough havoc in the opposition box for Owen to capitalise. No, my vote goes to Little Beckham junior as he is paraded on his Dad's shoulder after England win the final!
Graham McGrath, Yorkshire

My vote goes to Little Beckham junior as he is paraded on his Dad's shoulder after England win the final!

Graham McGrath, Yorkshire
Stars of the show will be the likes of Davids, Figo, and Zidane, but watch out for the young guns. Raul for Spain has not shined on the international stage so this could be his time to show what a truly gifted player he really is and at 22 he has already achieved everything at club level, this is his time for the next step . Also Del Piero of Italy will show why he is worth the tag of the biggest pay packet in the world. The Italian is full of natural flair and ability and if he clicks, get to the bookies quick because this man will run away with the golden boot and the Euro 2000 trophy.
Tan, England

Del Piero of Italy will show why he is worth the tag of the biggest pay packet in the world

Tan, England
There is going to be a lot of gifted players on show in the next few weeks. I think the stars of Euro 2000 are going to come from the midfield. Scholes is going to be a goal scoring sensation with Beckham hopefully reaching his full potential. Davids for Holland is often under-rated, but I feel possibly the best midfielder in Europe along with Zidane. Other names that roll of the tongue are Petit, Vieira, Overmars, Berger, Mendieta and Rui Costa. With all of these in the hat, the middle of the park is where all the action is going to be!.
Stu, England

Well known in German club football, Ulf Kirsten of Bayer Leverkusen has the credentials at club level and I believe Euro 2000 will provide the right stage for the Bundesliga superstar to take the tournament by form and convert his club form into international form and glory. Other stars could include Sweden's Magnus Hedman, Sinisa Mijhalovic of Yugoslavia and the Spanish midfield duo of Josep Guardiola and Gaizca Mendieta. Whoever the stars end up being, we are all in for a real treat!
Philip Nicholson, England

A lot has been said recently about Sol Campbell's dipping form, but let us not forget his glorious runs in France '98 (when he was voted England's player of the tournament) and his 'goal' against Argentina. If he returns to his club form he could easily be the player of the tournament.
Dave Hone, England

I'd say with his great form at the moment, Thierry Henry could steal the show but Figo is probably the best player in the world and if Portugal get far it will be thanks to him. Watch out for Raul and Casillas of Spain and Totti of Italy
Philip Ryan, Belgium

I think Pedrag Mijatovic will be the player to watch in Euro 2000. He's a world class predatory striker who possesses good vision, and produced a great cross for Stankovic to head home the equaliser at Lansdowne Road. This will be his last major tournament where he's in his prime, and I'm sure he'll be determined to show his fans his great talent
Kenneth Tierney, Ireland

I think Pedrag Mijatovic will be the player to watch in Euro 2000. He's a world class predatory striker who possesses good vision, and produced a great cross for Stankovic to head home the equaliser at Lansdowne Road

Kenneth Tierney, Ireland
If we are talking about magicians, then Figo and Zidane will mesmerise with their dribbling. David Beckham & Alex Del Piero could also star, thereżs just so much quality!
Marvin, Singapore

Figo,Raul and Zidane. But the one who would have been top scorer is not going and that is Christian Vieri
Stephen Crickley, England

Luis Figo will be the man of the tournament as he is amazing and is still getting better all the time. If he produces what he is capable of Portugal may get to the semi-finals or even win the tournament. Manuel Rui Costa is also alongside Figo and is playing great football at the moment as well so he will also be an influence on Portugal getting far.
Dave Peterson, England

Gerrard of Liverpool has been amazing in the games I've watched him play

Richard McCulloch, N. Ireland
I think Edgar Davids is an obvious choice but there will certainly be surprise performers. Gerrard of Liverpool has been amazing in the games I've watched him play. Figo will be good but we might not see too much of him as I think Portugal will get put out at the group stage.
Richard McCulloch, N. Ireland

Paul Scholes will be one of the most impressive players in the tournament.
Roger Janssen, Holland

Henrik Larsson is fresh and he is hungry, well worth watching

John, Scotland
Schmeichel, Kluivert, Emile Mpenza, Guardiola, Scholes, Figo, Henry. Those players will make the difference for their teams.
Joachim, Belgium

Davids, van der Saar, Figo, Overmars, Raul. If I had to pick one perhaps Figo is the most exciting player in Europe right now. Condolences to Beckham (too much competition at this level), Scholes and Henry.
Richard Cavenecia, USA

Apart from Henry, I am surprised that there is one player who has been overlooked by everybody, Henrik Larsson is fresh and he is hungry, well worth watching.
John, Scotland

I think that it will be Zidane of France, Scholes of England, and Nesta of Italy, who is best defender in world.
Rob Lisismanisis, Estonia

Dennis Bergkamp is lately showing he is in big form. This is his last Euro championships and most probably he will not participate in the 2002 World Cup. That's why I believe he is going to shine in this Euro tournament showing all his international class. Nobody forgets the goal he scored against Argentina in 1998 World Cup.
Naji V. Medlej, Lebanon.

The way Nick Barmby's been going from strength to strength in recent months, can you really write him off? My prediction is that the Everton man will play some blinding assists, setting up Robbie Fowler, who'll finish second highest scorer behind Raul.
Chris Dyke, England

The way Nick Barmby's been going from strength to strength in recent months, can you really write him off?

Chris Dyke, England
We can all pick and choose who will be the players of the tournament, players such as Davids, Zidane, Del Piero and Bergkamp. But unfortunately in many occasions these names do not perform to the high level they are capable of, or is it that the level of expectation is too high. So my prediction is that a couple of the Romanian players might spring a few surprises and maybe it's time for King Henry of France to claim his throne
Saeed, England

Maybe its time for King Henry of France to claim his throne

Saeed, England
I think the one who will be the greatest this tournament is at home. He broke his knee just before completing a transfer to Manchester United. I mean Ruud van Nistelrooy. It will be hard now for the Dutch team to become European Champion. So the big hero must be Boudewijn Zenden, who can play the whole left side or Philip Cocu, the player who makes Rivaldo play better in Barcelona!
Sjoerd Smit, The Netherlands

I think players like Luis Figo and Dennis Bergkamp have to be watched, but I think the biggest star could be Thierry Henry.
Andrew McCabe, Wales

I have no doubt that France will win the championship, they have the best players in all areas - Barthez, Desailly, Zidane, Anelka.
Al Kelly, Ireland

I think Luis Figo will be a star in Euro 2000. He always plays an important role for Barcelona and is used to the big stage. He will contribute an awful lot for Portugal and will get them at least to the semi-finals of Euro 2000.
Pete Bull, England

Figo always plays an important role for Barcelona and is used to the big stage

Pete Bull, England

Look out for lesser known players who have the potential to be Euro stars. My tips are Jan Koller (Czech Rep.), Stefano Fiore (Italy), Zlatko Zahovic (Slovenia), Okan (Turkey), and Carew (Norway).
Ayman Fazeli, England

I think Raul of Spain, Owen of England and Kluivert of Holland will be the major strikers at the tournament. In midfield I expect Figo, Davids and Beckham to star. In defence Thuram, Stam and Campbell to have good performances while Barry of England to show skill and composure beyond his years. In goal I expect Buffon of Italy to be the big star.
Gareth Mace, England

Owen of England and Kluivert of Holland will be the major strikers at the tournament

Gareth Mace
I think players like Michael Owen, Zinadine Zidane, Lois Figo and Totti from Italy are the ones to watch. I hope Owens shines from all as he is the fastest and most difficult offensive player to play against when he is not worrying about his injury.
Rafik Abdullahi, USA

Two players will rule Euro2000, Zidane with his heavenly touch and skill, and Davids with his amazing stamina. Shearer wont be able to do anything with the European defenders, for England, the only hope is through Beckham and Owen.
Hussain K., England

Two players will rule Euro 2000, Zidane with his heavenly touch and skill, and Davids with his amazing stamina

Hussain K, England

Zahovic is the Rivaldo of the East. Zidane is a visionary player, who with pacey forwards ahead of him, will create goals. Also we can't forget McManaman (but please don't root a floating player to the left wing). Now that marriage has settled him, Raul is the best attacker in Europe. And finally Fran is a -pacey winger who nobody has prepared for (they'll pay for that!)
Richard Jackson, England

Everybody forgot that a wounded lion is at it's most dangerous....enter again Del Piero and strike bullets. Don't forgot to mention that someone called Fabio Cannavaro of Italy will be the star defender.
Ajmal, Afghanistan

There is absolutely no doubt that Raul should be the main star of the tournament if he and his team-mates in the Spanish team manage to perform to their full potential. Portugal's Luis Figo can also be counted upon to produce moments of breathtaking football, as he has shown for Barcelona throughout this season. The less lauded players who will also come to prominence should be Holland's Philippe Cocu and France's Lillian Thuram.
Nick, France

Olivier Neuville of Bayer Leverkusen and Germany is the man who will shatter all of our dreams

James Leafe, England

Look out for the Portuguese duo of Rui Costa and Luis Figo as well as Raul. Expect a bit more from the Turks especially Hakan Sukur. A major contender from the French could well be Thierry Henry who might battle for the golden boot.
Jax, UK

Olivier Neuville of Bayer Leverkusen and Germany is the man who will shatter all of our dreams. Raul and Henry will also have a good tournament.
James Leafe, England

I am very sure that the best of the best are going to be Davids, Anelka, Figo, Zidane and Seedorf. They're all going to shine!
Jeddie Bere, Zimbabwe

I've read all the comments so far, and I'm really surprised that only a couple of people have mentioned Zidane. He is undoubtedly the best midfielder in Europe (miles ahead of Beckham or Scholes) and even though I doubt France will win the tournament, I think he will make a huge impact. I don't expect much from England either, as there simply aren't enough top players, compared to Italy, Holland, France or Spain.
Simon McWilliam, England

Desailly will surely be a dominant figure again

Will Davies, UK

Sol Campbell will show the world that he is the best defender in Europe and the world. He will be the player of the tournament.
Aaron Paxford, England

Fiore (Italy), Stam (Holland), Gerrard (England), Guardiola (Spain), Figo (Portugal)
Marc Goodridge, Canada

It's got to be time for Spain to shine on the international stage, and if they do you can bet that Raul will be the star of the tournament. We know that the likes of Bergkamp and Zidane can turn it on at the highest level and Desailly will surely be a dominant figure again. But considering England has more unrealised international potential than any other team in Europe, maybe the surprise stars will be players like Wise and McManaman.
Will Davies, UK

Raul, Henry, Davids and Figo...oh yeah, and Shearer, Owen, Beckham, McManaman, Scholes and Ince!
Wasim Younis, UK

Sol Campbell will be the player of the tournament.

Aaron Paxford, England

Owen, Raul and Beckham will steal the show at Euro 2000.
Matthew Malone, England

The French squad has made just four changes since their World Cup win, and with Anelka in place of Guivarch in attack they will be even stronger than two years ago. I think that Zidane is on top form at the moment and no one can touch him.
Keith, Scotland

Tomás Rosický from the Czech team.
Richard Zajíc, Czech Republic

Watch out for Barca stars Figo and Kluivert. Wing wizard Figo will prove he is the best in the world. Del Piero has something to prove. The stage is also set for Spanish wonder kid Raul to show his class.
Apollo, England

I'd like to think McManaman can do it and of course there's the obvious Figo, Raul and Zidane but let's hope it's one of the English boys!
Alex Mason, England

Wing wizard Figo will prove he is the best in the world

Apollo, England

I think Raul of Spain will terrify teams at this tournament.
Ross, Scotland

The stage is set for Owen, Beckham, Scholes, McManaman and, last but not least, Wise. We know how good they are, and come June 10th they will get better.
Jonathan Scott, England

Hakan Sukur has scored against two Italian, two German, two English and a Spanish team this season. Who knows which European goalkeeper is next?
Osman Hakan Cepken, Turkey

Owen, Beckham, Raul and Figo.
Laurent Gassiot, France

Hakan Sukur has scored against two Italian, two German, two English and a Spanish team this season. Who knows which European goalkeeper is next?

Osman Hakan Cepken, Turkey
In my opinion, it's going to be the tournament of individual actions because of the strong defensive lines of the squads. Edgar Davids, David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane will play an important role in the midfield. Jaap Stam will be the best defender of the tournament and I hope that Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert and Marc Overmars will form the deadly strike-force of Holland which will give them victory.
J.Molenaar, The Netherlands

I think Jan Koller of the Czech Republic could well make a big impact. Other players who should stand out are Raul, Beckham, Figo, Strupar and Del Piero.
Georges, UK

I wish Hakan and Hagi, the stars of Galatasaray, will be the stars of Euro 2000 but I'm afraid both Turkey and Romania will not be able to qualify from their groups.
Metin Yolcu, Turkey

I think Jaap Stam will be the star of Euro 2000. He's had two great seasons with Manchester United. and will put strikers like Del Piero and Thierry Henry out of the spotlight.
Phil Matthews, England

I think you can expect a lot of the Dutch attacking duo of Bergkamp and Kluivert. It's Bergkamp's last big tournament for the Netherlands and he wants to leave the team in style. Kluivert's always good for a couple of goals. Also Edgar Davids will probably have a good tournament.
Jur de Reu, The Netherlands

Jan Koller of the Czech Republic could well make a big impact

Georges, UK

My friend and brain of our Slovenian team, Zahovic, will be the big star of the tournament. Also, watch goalkeeper Jan Bartelvic, the cousin I am proud of.
Thomas "T-Bone" Bartelvic, Slovenia

Luis Figo is in great form at the moment and will be on fire in the tournament but he will not play every game and Portugal won't get very far. Beckham will be superb.
Alex Fielding, England

Watch out for the Yugoslav strikers! The combination of Pedrag Mijatovic (Fiorentina), Savo Milosevic (Real Zaragoza), Darko Kovacevic (Juventus) and Mateja Kezman (Partizan Belgrade) is lethal! My favourite is Kezman, the young gun who is going to prove his quality in Euro 2000.
Vanja, Yugoslavia

Montella - Italy, Owen - England, Raul - Spain, Buffon - Italy, Figo - Portugal.
Alex, England

You can expect a lot of the Dutch attacking duo of Bergkamp and Kluivert

Jur de Reu, The Netherlands

I think Figo will be the star player of the tournament and the likes of Conceicao, Rui Costa and Baia wont be far behind. I also think that it could be where Beto and Nuno Gomes show their true talents to the rest of the world.
Carlos Pires, England

Alan Shearer will go out with a bang and I think he has as good a chance as anybody of getting the golden boot. Raul and Del Piero will be his main rivals. Seedorf will overshadow Davids and Yugoslavia will be the surprise team.
Alex Perry, England

The injury of Vieri will be a big blow for the Italians, he will be sorely missed. Edgar Davids will be named as best player of the tournament, do not forget the great defenders Nesta (plus Cannavaro) and Thuram...strong as lions (the three lions???). The top goalscorer will be Raul, Owen or Kluivert.
Frank "Don Cheech" Scalise, The Netherlands

We think there's only one player who is in outstanding form and who can be the star player of Euro 2000 and that's Raul. He will inspire Spain to the title. The loser of the tournament will definitely be Lothar Matthaus, because he could have been my granddad.
Onno en Hessel, Holland

Alan Shearer will go out with a bang

Alex Perry, England

The top star will be Portugal's Luis Figo as he's had a great year at Barcelona and was great in the Champions League, and the best in the world right now.
Paul, Canada

This tournament will establish Kieron Dyer's international reputation. Italy's goalkeeper Buffon will shine on account of his outfield players failings.
Steven Mason, Thailand

The Yugoslavs have both experience and youth. Look out for forward Kezman and right back Dudic.
Paul Zecevic, UK

Edgar Davids for Holland and Raul for Spain.
Emiel Broekman, Holland

Hagi will be the star - if only he'd stay away from the referee's reds.
Niraj Shah, Kenya

David's will round off a terrific season with being the stone of the Dutch side and guide them to victory. For England McManaman will be disappointing on the international stage and the surprise of the tournament will be Romania's Floretin Petre.
Kieran Unsworth, England

Hagi will be the star - if only he'd stay away from the referee's reds

Niraj Shah, Kenya
The best players will be Sol Campbell in defence, Denis Wise in Midfield and Raul up front. Possibly Inzaghi for golden boot.
Rob Clarke, England

I think, that with a doubt the Dutch players will be the stars of the Euro 2000.The stars will be Edgar Davids, Marc Overmars, Jaap Stam, Clarence Seedorf and Ed Win Van Der Saar. They are the favourites to win the Euro 2000 and I think they will win it with amount of World class players.
Edgar van Basten, England

I think that Raul, Totti and Owen will all have good tournaments but as I think Holland will win it, Davids will have an outstanding Euro 2000
Paul Howse, England

I think Dennis Bergkamp and also David Beckham will be the stars of Euro 2000 and maybe Raul and Scholes if they can be consistent performers
Dre, England

Paul Scholes will be the man of the moment in Euro 2000

Dave, England
I think that David Beckham will be the best player in Euro 2000. Because the Brazilians are not involved, England or France are the best two teams in the tournament. Spain have had a good season, but they did not perform in World Cup 98, so the Netherlands could be a threat.
Gaz, England

I believe that Paul Scholes will be the man of the moment in Euro 2000. Also look out for Steve McManaman, if he plays like he has done for Real and Keegan plays him in the right position he could well see England into the latter stages.
Dave, England

Henry, Overmars, Raul, Beckham, Davids are all great players and all deserve to be the stars of Euro 2000.
Peter Cookson, England

Thierry Henry will be the star of Euro 2000, and will definitely be a contender for the golden boot

Lee Humphries, England
I think three players will be the best in Euro 2000 - David Beckham, Hakan Sukur and Raul from Spain. Additionally, good luck to all teams and please remember we all should be polite fans like real Europeans.
Yusuf Ergün Ayhan, Turkey

Beckham, Scholes, Figo, Anelka, Inzaghi, Janker will show their class, and some of the older ones (Maldini, Wise, Schmeichel, Zidane) will confirm it.
Ulysses Christodoulou, USA

Thierry Henry will be the star of Euro 2000, and will definitely be a contender for the golden boot. His performances for Arsenal have been supreme of late, with an outstanding performance in the UEFA cup. He is still young and will grow with experience.
Lee Humphries, England

Edgar Davids will easily be the star of the show.
Martin van der Vorst, Netherlands

Two players to look out for are France's Nicholas Anelka and Yugoslavia's Dejan Stankovic. Both are very young, but far from inexperienced and I am sure they will be setting the pace of the games ahead.
Dera Petlic, Botswana

There will only be one man at Euro 2000 and that will be Dennis Bergkamp. The Dutch are quite easily the best team and it is Bergkamp who is the beating heart in the middle.

Dennis Berkamp has enough class to lead Holland to Euro 2000 glory

Rob Amos, England
Scorer of the goal of the tournament in the World Cup, he will be keen to make up for the disappointment of semi-final defeat in the same tournament. Scholes is a great player and Guardiola can be expected to shine in the middle of the Spanish midfield, but the player of the tournament is invariably the key player in the winning side. That will be Bergkamp.
James Mythen, England

Yugoslavia are the dark horses and their striking partnership of Milosevic and Kovacevic will cause problems for any defence.
Ernie Brogden, England

France will be very tough to beat with the same solid side as they had when winning the World Cup. They now have the added bonus of in form strikers - watch out for Thierry Henry, the best striker in Europe.
Tim Stanley, South Africa

I think the stars of the show will be Thuram in defence, Vieira, Davids and Scholes in midfield, Hasselbaink and Anelka up front.
Mejaman, France

Everybody forgets goalkeepers. After the World Cup, Fabien Barthez is bound to have an influence on the fortunes of France. It is obviously outfield players though that win matches.

If Italy does well Alessandro Del Piero will be the key player of the team

Zana J, Canada
Shearer for certain, as he always performs at the highest level. It may though be Gheorghe Hagi's last outing on the world stage, and even if Romania do go out after the group matches, it is likely that Hagi will have an influence - England beware.
Chris Curtis, England

I have a feeling that defences will play a great role with goalkeepers shining through. Peter Schmeichel has a chance to remind the world of what an outstanding goalkeeper he is. Also in the frame will be Buffon, Barthez, Van de Saar, Khan and Canizares. I hope that Euro 2000 will be full of goals but I feel that the calibre of goalkeepers is greater than that of the strikers.
Edward Hawkes, England

Luis Figo will be one of the top contenders for me. He has skill flair and physical strength. Another player, who for me is one of the best midfielders in the world, Edgar Davids, will shine on his home turf, he also has a strong team around him, and this is vital for individual success. If Michael Owen runs at defenders like he did in France then he'll raise a few eyebrows. Another midfielder who is unstoppable on his day is Zidane. But there is one player who will stand out head and shoulders amongst the cream of European football - Dennis Wise of England.
Dom Fahey, England

I am very sure the best of the best is going to be Zidane, because he has all the talent that other soccer players don't have. He is like a soccer king, I like watching him play in the field. I feel something when I watch him playing soccer, he is the best and that is why he is going to be the star player of Euro 2000.
Dawit, U.S

Peter Schmeichel has a chance to remind the world of what an outstanding goalkeeper he is.

Edward Hawkes, England
Keep Fernando Hierro of Spain in mind. He is a top quality centre back, he's just coming back to fitness, and it was no coincidence that Real Madrid didn't perform in La Liga while he was missing - look out for his free kicks.
Paul O'Hare, England

Most people look towards attackers and strikers when choosing their stars of the tournament. The real men to watch at Euro 2000 will be Aberlardo (Spain), Babbel (Germany) and Staelens (Belgium). All are top class defenders but don't receive the praise they deserve.
Stephanie Smith, England

Germany may be dangerous now that most are jumping on the band wagon and writing them off. If they do reach the latter stages Christian Ziege may come to the fore as a real star.
Tim, Isle of Man

If Spain does not disappoint as they did in France 98, then Gaizka Mendieta of Valencia will be the man to watch. Also look out for Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf in the Dutch midfield. Francesco Totti is another jewel of Italian soccer. Do not forget that Italy always tend to produce the stars at big tournaments - Paolo Rossi in Spain '82, Schilacci in Italia '90, R. Baggio in USA '94 and Vieri in France '98.
Abu, Canada

If Turkey do well Hakan Sukur will be the star of the Euro 2000

Serkan, Turkey
I wish my country had a player like Paul Scholes, he is brilliant and could well be the star of Euro 2000.
Herman Jurgen, Germany

The Portuguese team are very talented. It is Luis Figo that will make the difference in Euro 2000 for Portugal. He is a class act, a player that can't be man marked because of his sheer talent.
Dipaque Bhatt, England

With no doubt, I'm surely 100% that Michael Owen will be the illuminated star at Europe 2000.
Luu Le Hoang Linh, United States

Nobody is mentioning goalkeepers! I expect great performances from Magnus Hedman and Fabien Barthez

Will, England
I think Raul could be the star of the tournament. We all know he's a quality striker as Manchester United found out. If he faces Jaap Stam again he will show us what kind of defender Stam really is. If Anelka plays for France he could also be a star. He has just come back to form and will be fitter and fresher than most of the defenders he might meet.
Anton McNulty, Republic of Ireland

Look out for the Yugoslavs. Most of their players want to finish their career on a high. Their young gun, Mateja Kezman, will shine and show the rest of the Europe his amazing ball skills and pace which will undoubtedly earn him a place with a top European club next season.
Stefan Brooks, England

Figo will run the whole tournament but Portugal will not win it. Vieri will also have a good tournament while leading Italy to victory
Paul Nash, England

The stars of the show will be midfielders; Egdar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Patrik Berger, and Christian Karembeau.
Stephen Webb, England

Watch the Portuguese, not only Figo but Rui Costa, one of the best creative players in the world.
George Brann, England

There's just one player who will show the world what he's made of and that's David Beckham. He'll win Euro2000 for England!
Alex Smit, Netherlands
