France v Portugal clockwatch
France 2-1 Portugal
After extra time - France win on golden goal
(Brussels. Attendance: 50,000)
6 mins: After a pedestrian start to the game, France finally get a cross into the penalty box after Thierry Henry is fouled wide on the right. But a push by Patrick Vieira means the set piece comes to nothing.
13 mins: The sparring continues, with both sides looking nervous, and a speculative shot by French captain Didier Deschamps - on his 100th international appearance - marks the first effort on either goal.
15 mins: Portugal goalkeeper Victor Baia races off his line to palm the ball away from Henry on the edge of his area, before completing the clearance.
16 mins: Henry's pace begins to cause problems in the Portuguese defence and Abel Xavier's foul on the Arsenal striker gives Zinedine Zidane the chance to whip in a free kick that Xavier heads clear.
18 mins: Nicholas Anelka bursts clear of the defence and sends over a teasing cross, but his former Arsenal team-mate Emanuelle Petit is crowded out in the penalty area.
19 mins: Portugal take the lead out of nowhere. Sergio Conceicao muscles his way past Deschamps and tees up Nuno Gomes, who spins and drills home a left-foot shot for his fourth goal of the tournament.
23 mins: Patrick Vieira is handed the first booking of the semi-final after a crunching challenge on Luis Figo.
26 mins: Petit's free-kick finds Laurent Blanc in the penalty area, but his flicked header drifts straight to keeper Baia.
29 mins: Anelka breezes past two defenders before rifling a shot straight at Baia.
30 mins: Luis Figo breaks clear on the counter attack and his shot deflects off a defender, forcing Fabien Barthez to adjust before making the save.
33 mins: Zidane, Thuram and Henry combine beautifully down the right before Henry sees a shot deflected over the Portuguese bar.
39 mins: Marcel Dessailly is forced to make a last-ditch challenge to prevent Rui Costa from breaking clear - but the French defender shows his studs and is booked by Austrian referee Guenter Benko.
44 mins: Henry pulls the ball back for Arsenal team-mate Vieira, who gets in a shot at the second attempt after defender Jose Vidigal slips.
45 mins: Zidane finds some space on the edge of the Portuguese box and hits a right-foot shot which curls agonisingly wide of the right-hand post with Baia beaten.
Half time: France 0-1 Portugal
51 mins: France hit back within six minutes of the restart as Anelka turns in the area and pulls the ball back for Henry to drill home, with the help of a deflection off Fernando Couto.France 1-1 Portugal
54 mins: Suddenly, Portugal are on the back foot and Luis Figo is booked for a challenge on Deschamps.
55 mins: Jorge Costa fouls Anelka on the edge of the box but Petit's free-kick slams into the defensive wall and
Portugal break on the counter attack through Figo. But his cross is headed acrobatically clear by Bixente Lizarazu as Gomes lurks ominously at the far post.
59 mins: Desailly climbs highest to meet a Zidane corner, but sends his header wide of the near post.
62 mins: Henry shows fantastic control, only to be clattered by Dimas, who is rightly booked.
70 mins: Zidane controls brilliantly and whips in a left-foot cross which Anelka just fails to reach as he loses his footing in the area. It proves Anelka's last involvement, as he is immediately replaced by Sylvain Wiltord.
73 mins: Desailly loops a header way too high from another Zidane corner from the right.
76 mins: Petit's snap-shot on the volley is superbly tipped round the post by Baia, though an offside flag would have ruled the effort out.
81 mins: Neat posession football from France finally sees the ball reach Deschamps, but his shot from way out flies high and wide.
86 mins: Figo's superb pass picks out Conceicao, but Barthez races out of his box to clear. From the throw, Conceicao's cross is headed across goal by Gomes towards Jao Pinto, but Blanc defends his ground superbly.
88 mins: Lilian Thuram bursts into the box and goes down under a challenge from Couto as he tries in vain to pull the ball back into the danger area. Referee Benko rightly ignores claims for a penalty.
90 mins: Lizarazu's foul on Conceicao gives Figo the chance to whip in a last-minute free-kick which Everton's Xavier heads goalwards, producing a superb reaction stop from Barthez.
90 mins: France 1-1 Portugal
91 mins: Substitute Robert Pires breaks down the left and crosses for Zidane to blaze a header over the bar in the first minute of sudden death extra time.
96 mins: Henry breaks clear but is well marshalled by substitute Bento as he looks to shoot. From the resulting corner, Blanc heads bravely over the bar as Baia's attempted punch catches the Frenchman's header.
98 mins: Conceicao breaks clear down the right, evading a linesman before sending over a cross which Vieira hacks clear.
106 mins: Substitute Pinto is unlucky to be booked for catching Desailly.
107 mins: Zidane is well placed for a shot on the edge of the D, but a disappointing strike from bobbles well wide.
109 mins: A superb sliding tackle by Xavier halts Zidane and Portugal break clinically, Pinto ending the move with a low shot which creeps an inch wide of Barthez's far post.
117 mins: Trezeguet attempts to squeeze in a shot at the near post but is blocked by Baia, but the ball runs free to Wiltord, whose follow-up shot hits the outstretched arm of Xavier.
Referee Benko at first appears to award a corner, but after consulting his linesman points to the spot, sparking furious protests from the Portuguese.
The decision gives Zidane the chance to fire the golden goal from the penalty spot and he makes no mistake with a clincal strike high into the top left corner to send France into rapture and spark protests from the Portuguese.
Those protests see Gomes red carded after the final whistle has blown as Portugal's fantastic tournament comes to a controversial end.
