Italy v Romania clockwatch
Inzaghi and Galca
Italy's Inzaghi beats Galca - buts scuffs his shot wide
Italy 2-0 Romania (FT)
(Brussels. Att: 42,500)

Italy coach Dino Zoff selects the starting line-up that beat Belgium last week, so superstar Alessandro Del Piero is left on the bench, as Francesco Totti partners Filippo Inzaghi up front.

Romania's inspiration Gheorghe Hagi returns in midfield after being banned against England, while Adrian Mutu is pushed into an attacking position in place of the suspended Adrian Ilie.

7 mins: Stefano Fiore hooks the ball into the Romanian area - but Inzaghi scuffs his shot wide from six yards out.

Franceso Totti
Top-class Totti: The Roma star volleys Italy ahead
9 mins: Hagi, boasting a new shaven-headed look, blasts a free-kick over the bar.

18 mins: With Romania the more settled of the two teams in the early stages, influential youngster Mutu ghosts into the box - but the famed Italian defence clears the danger.

27 mins: Italy at last show a cutting edge as Inzaghi is sent free by Totti on the right and crosses for Fiore in a dangerous position - but the Udinese man shins the ball well over.

33 mins: Romania fail to clear from a free-kick, the ball is chipped back into the box and Totti cushions the ball on his chest before lashing a fierce volley past keeper Bogdan Stelea. Italy 1-0 Romania

34 mins: Mutu sends Hagi clear and the veteran lobs on-rushing keeper Francesco Toldo - but the ball bounces up against the post and Mark Iuliano is able to smack it clear.

35 mins: Suddenly a drab game has been transformed and the action switches to the Romanian penalty area, where Totti comes close with a lofted effort.

37 mins: Demetrio Albertini, playing his 70th game for Italy, is booked for a foul on Hagi. From the free-kick Constantin Galca unleashes a superb volley just wide of Toldo's far post.

42 mins: Italy take control of the match in the run-up to half-time with the crucial second goal. Albertini's angled through-ball beats the off-side trap and Inzaghi - criticised by many pundits before the match - strokes the ball around Stelea. Italy 2-0 Romania

44 mins: Romania storm back up field and the livewire Hagi tests Toldo from the edge of the area, but the keeper claims the ball at the second attempt.

Half-time: Italy 2-0 Romania

Italy captain Paolo Maldini fails to reappear after the break and is replaced at left-back by Gianluca Pessotto.

52 mins: Impressive defender Galca again tries his luck from long range - but this time the ball clears the bar.

Hagi and Fiore
Midfield collision: Hagi and Fiore tussle for possession
53 mins: Hagi is shown the yellow card for fouling Antonio Conte, who is stretchered off with an ankle injury. Luigi Di Biagio replaces him in midfield. Romania bring on Ioan Ganea for Viorel Moldovan.

55 mins: Ganea immediately has a chance - but Pessotto blocks his shot.

58 mins: Hagi, who is due to retire after the tournament, collapses in the box under Gianluca Zambrotta's challenge. Romania appeal for a penalty - but referee Pereira spots that there is no contact and instead sends off the veteran skipper for a second bookable offence.

60 mins: Despite their numerical disadvantage, Romania continue to press and Dorinel Munteanu comes close with a deflected effort.

62 mins: Romania cause chaos in the Italian box with an incisive free-kick move - but Liviu Ciobotariu's goal-bound shot is blocked on the line by Zambrotta.

65 mins: Toldo rushes out to deny Mutu - and suffers a painful clash with the frontman.

67 mins: Albertini's sublime pass sets up Inzaghi, but for once the luck is with Romania as Stela produces an excellent save - and the ball ricochets away off the post.

68 mins: Ioan Lupescu replaces Romanian defender Galca.

72 mins: With Romania desperate for a way back into the game, Munteanu wastes a free-kick.

74 mins: Huge cheers are generated from the Italian section of the crowd as fans' favourite Del Piero is brought on for goalscorer Totti.

77 mins: Another great first-time pass from Albertini beats Romania's defence - but Inzaghi squanders the chance with an off-target shot.

90 mins: It's last chance time for Romania - but Ganea slices his shot wide.

93 mins: The referee blows the final whistle and Italy record their fourth win a row - and a place in the semi-finals.
