Spain v Yugoslavia clockwatch
![]() Hot-shot Milosevic heads Yugoslavia in front
FT: Spain 4-3 Yugoslavia
(Bruges - Att: 22,000) 4 mins: Savo Milosevic comes close early on for Yugoslavia but puts a close-range header from Predrag Mijatovic's cross just over the bar. 7 mins: Spain's Ivan Helguera twists and turns on the edge of the Yugoslav box and sends a low shot just wide. 11 mins: Spain appeal strongly for a penalty as Goran Djorovic slips and appears to handle the ball while on the ground. 13 mins: An early substitution as Jovan Stankovic comes on for Djorovic. 18 mins: Alfonso misses a golden opportunity when he fails to control a good cross from Salgado. 23 mins: Jose Etxeberria is on for Fran as Gaizka Mendieta tiwce almost gives Spain the lead, first with a long-range free-kick and then a mis-hit volley that Raul just fails to divert past Ivica Kralj.
Spain 0-1 Yugoslavia
39 mins: Raul's neat movement on the edge of the box earns him a yard of space. The ball finds its way through to Alfonso who sweeps it home with his left foot. 40 mins: Spain have certainly been buoyed by that equaliser. Raul suddenly seems to have the beating of the Yugoslav defence, but Mendieta is unable to follow up a rebound after a good block from Kralj. 42 mins: Raul just fails to get on the end of a high swinging cross and seconds later sends a side-foot volley inches wide. It's certainly all Spain now - Yugoslavia are just hanging on for the half-time whistle.
45 mins: The interval duly arrives, but Spain go into the dressing rooms much the happier side.
49 mins: Milosevic goes on a mazy run into the box but is unable to find anyone to convert his scuffed centre.
51 mins: Substitute Dejan Govedarica picks up a pass from Drulovic and smashes the ball home from the edge of the area. Another fine assist for Drulovic, another fine finish and it's Yugoslavia who move ahead again.
52 mins: They aren't in front for long. Etxeberria sets up fellow substitute Pedro Munitis, who curls in a beautful strike off the post and an instant equaliser for Spain. What a superb game this is turning out to be.
67 mins: Mendieta intercepts a pass and diverts the ball back to Santiago Canizares but the referee penalises him for a backpass. Sinisa Mihajlovic receives the ball from an indirect free-kick in the box but drags it well wide. 73 mins: A super 60-yard pass from Mihajlovic finds Mijatovic free at the far post but the striker blasts high and wide.
75 mins Another Mihajlovic delivery causes pandemonium in the Spain box and Slobodan Komljenovic eventually stabs past Canizares at the far post. Ten-man Yugoslavia go ahead for the third time in a cracking match. Spain need something fast or they will be out of Euro 2000. 77 mins: Jose Guardiola tries an audacious chip from outside the area which Kralj has to tip over. 78 mins: Alfonso wriggles into the box and forces Kralj into a good block. 82 mins: As the scores stand, Spain need two goals to save their campaign. They surge forward but Yugoslavia are holding firm. 86 mins: Spain waste a free-kick on the edge of the box which seemed tailor-made for Mendieta's left foot.
90 mins: A lifeline for Jose Antonio Camacho's side as the referee points to the spot for a challenge on Abelardo. Mendieta steps up to coolly slot home - and Spain are still alive... just.
94 mins: Unbelievable scenes as the ball gets pumped into a crowded Yugoslav area and Alfonso shows great poise and skill to guide a difficult volley into the corner. Who would have thought it? Spain are back from the brink.
95 mins: The final whistle blows and Spain have done it. Those two late goals have got them into the quarter-finals after the most thrilling game of the tournament so far.
