3 mins: Alessandro del Piero has a good sight of goal but hits his volley well over the bar.

6 mins: Henrik Larsson chances his arm from 35 yards but his shot goes high and wide.

9 mins: Johan Mjallby meets a corner with a ferocious header but Angelo di Livio somehow heads it away and over the bar.

13 mins: Larsson flicks on for Fredrik Ljungberg who scuffs his first shot and then hits wide with his left foot when clean through on goal.

19 mins: Italy win a free-kick 25 yards out but del Piero's effort is not up to his usual standards.

25 mins: Sweden are pressing and Magnus Svensson breaks a challenge to get clear on goal but Francesco Toldo comes out quickly to block the shot.

27 mins: Vincenzo Montella plays a cute one-two with Del Piero on the edge of the Swedish area, but Montella lifts his shot over the bar.

30 mins: Sweden win their ninth corner of the game, but more worrying to Italy is the fact that Paolo Maldini goes down clutching his left knee after challenging Larsson.

31 mins: The corner comes to nothing and Maldini gingerly returns to the fray.

36 mins: Ljungberg feeds Osmanovski on the right-hand side of the area and he shoots hard and low to the far post but Toldo gets down well and holds on.

39 mins: Italy 1-0 Sweden Del Piero delivers a corner to the near post and Luigi di Biagio rises unmarked to head home. The goal is harsh on Sweden who have been the better side.

41 mins: Maldini succumbs to his injured knee and is replaced by Alessandro Nesta.

HT: The half ends without further incident and Sweden must turn things around in the second half if they are to qualify.


50 mins: The first chance of the second half falls to Sweden when Svensson is hacked down three yards from the edge of the area but Patrick Andersson hits the free-kick straight into the wall. Niclas Alexandersson comes on to replace Svensson.

55 mins: Sweden are struggling to get back on top and replace Mjallby with Daniel Andersson.

63 mins: Italy are still doing a good containing job on the Swedes and bring on Stefano Fiore to replace Di Livio.

64 mins: Osmanovski has Sweden's best effort of the half but Toldo fields it fairly easily at the near post.

66 mins: Paolo Negro breaks down the right and puts a teasing ball across the keeper but Del Piero can not quite reach it at the far post.

70 mins: Ljungberg gets away on the left-hand side and finds Larsson in the area. The Celtic player flicks on for Patrick Andersson but he shoots straight at Toldo from close range.

71 mins: Ljungberg is becoming more and more influential and hits a 20-yarder with his left foot into the side-netting.

76 mins: Italy 1-1 Sweden Kennet Andersson, who has just come on as substitute, holds the ball up and feeds Larsson between the two Italian central defenders. Larsson holds his nerve and sidesteps Toldo to equalise.

78 mins: Sweden are pushing for the win and Alexandersson finds Larsson at the far post but he heads straight at Toldo.

81 mins: Kennet Andersson is causing Italy a deal of trouble but he strikes just over from Larsson's knockdown.

83 mins: Italy show they are still dangerous as Fiore puts in a wicked ball from the right and Mellberg does well to clear when under pressure from Del Piero.

84 mins: Del Piero hits a free-kick inches over the bar with Hedman scrambling across his goal.

85 mins: With Sweden pushing forward Del Piero breaks and sets up Fiore but his shot deflects over the top.

88 mins: Italy 2-1 Sweden The goal which Italy were threatening on the break comes as Montella intercepts and feeds Del Piero. The Juventus player shrugs off one challenge and strikes a beautiful left-foot shot past Hedman.

89 mins: Sweden almost get an equaliser as Patrick Andersson rises at the far post but heads just over.

90 mins: Del Piero ought to make it 3-1 but as he stretches for a Montella cross he can't keep his shot under the bar from eight yards out.

FT: Italy 2-1 Sweden Sweden have pressed for most of the game but like Belgium have succumbed to the Italians scoring on the break. Italy move on with three wins out of three but Sweden are on their way home.
