Belgium v Turkey clockwatch
![]() Hakan Sukur (right) puts Turkey ahead in Brussels
Belgium 0-2 Turkey
(Brussels - Att: 48,000) 2 mins: Emile Mpenza comes close early on for the co-hosts with a fierce drive after some nice build-up play down the left side, and then a side-foot effort that he drags wide of the post. 4 mins: Luc Nilis, starting in place of Branko Strupar, shows good pace to stretch the Turkish defence and forces Rustu into a fine block. 13 mins: It's all Belgium early on in Brussels. This time it's midfielder Bart Goor who sees a deflected, low long-range effort bobble just wide. 15 mins: Hakan Sukur tries to wrestle free from a long ball but Joos Valgaeren is able to mop up at the back for Belgium. 18 mins: Goor crosses well from the left but Mpenza is unable to get any power behind a header. Marc Wilmots tries an acrobatic overhead kick which is blocked and Gert Verheyen volleys the rebound well over the bar. 20 mins: Tugay almost profits from Turkey's first real attack, picking up a decent cross from the right. But his shot is blocked as the Belgian defenders close in. 24 mins: Mpenza has a tap-in ruled out for offside after Rustu can only parry a powerful shot.
30 mins: Nilis is only inches away with a rocket of a shot rifled through the legs of a Turkish defender. 33 mins: Turkey are more in the game now. Sukur does well in the box to tee up Okan but the little man miscues horribly. A good chance wasted. 36 mins: Arif nutmegs Eric Deflandre to move through on goal but De Wilde manages to divert his left-foot effort wide. 41 mins: A substitution, but not for either side. Instead it is referee Kim Nielsen who hobbles off with a groin strain, to be replaced by fourth official Guenter Benko.
45 mins: Sukur chases a high swirling punt into the area and outjumps De Wilde to head the ball into an empty net. Turkey take the lead, and as the scores stand, are sensationally on course for a place in the quarter-finals. 46 mins: Almost an action replay of the goal as Sukur and De Wilde jump together again to meet another high ball. This time, the Belgian keeper's hands get there first. At the other end, Goor flashes a left-foot shot wide. 52 mins: Rustu produces a fantastic save to somehow tip Mpenza's flying header over the bar.
60 mins: A succession of blocked shots and deflections as the Turks are pushed back. Rustu is forced into several desperate punches as Belgium pile on the pressure. Can they find the goal they need to keep their Euro 2000 dreams alive?
70 mins: Suddenly, Turkey sprint clear in a two-on-one breakaway. Suat centres for Sukur who finishes with aplomb. The co-hosts are stunned. Turkey lead 2-0 and look good for second place in the group. 72 mins: Rustu again denies Belgium, this time with a close-range block to thwart Nilis. 81 mins: Arif has a great chance to put the result beyond doubt but smashes the ball wide of the right hand post. 84 mins: Things go from bad to worse for Belgium. De Wilde, who has looked shaky all night, speeds from his line yet again but fails to get the ball and instead flattens Arif. He is duly dismissed and Deflandre takes over in goal.
92 mins: The whistle blows, and it's the Turks who are celebrating. Hakan Sukur's brace sees them snatch second place in the group from Belgium, who suffer the ignominious fate of becoming the first ever hosts to fail to qualify from the group stages of a European Championship finals.
Belgium: De Wilde, Deflandre, Staelens, Valgaeren, Van Kerckhoven, Verheyen (Strupar 63), Vanderhaege, Goor (Hendrikx 60), Wilmots, Nilis (de Bilde 77), E. Mpenza. Turkey: Rustu, Ogun, Alpay, Fatih, Okan (Ergun 77), Suat, Tugay (Tayfur 37), Tayfun, Abdullah, Hakan Sukur, Arif (Osman 87).
