Romania and England - the past
Romanian celebrations
Can Romania repeat their win in the 1998 World Cup?
England have to go right back to the 1970 World Cup finals in Mexico for a defeat over Romania.

Tuesday's Euro 2000 match in Charleroi will be the 11th encounter between these two European middle-weights and BBC Sport Online take a look at previous matches.

24 May 1939
Friendly at the ANEF Stadium, Bucharest

Romania 0-2 England

This match was the first tournament for an English squad on the continent. The team was greeted with a noisy welcome by 3,000 fans at the Bucharest rail station, despite the absence of Stanley Matthews and Eddie Hapgood.

England's first ever fixture with Romania was a 2-0 victory. West Ham's striker Len Goulden opened the scoring after only seven minutes and a second half goal by Welsh secured the win.

6 November 1968
Friendly at the 23 August Stadium, Bucharest

Romania 0-0 England

Having automatically qualified for the World Cup in 1970, competitive internationals for England were at a premium and so the friendlies were a welcome boost to the English squad.

The leadership of Bobby Moore and the strikeforce of Bobby Charlton, Roger Hunt and Geoff Hurst failed to penetrate the determined Romanian defence and the game ended goaless.

15 January 1969
Friendly at Wembley Stadium, London

England 1-1 Romania

With the Mexican World Cup getting closer England were the hosts this time against a strong Romanian side.

Jack Charlton headed in England's opener on 27 minutes after a free kick by brother Bobby, and the scorer completed an eventful evening hand-balling in the penalty-box with only 16 minutes remaining.

Dumitrache converted from the spot to gain a draw for the Romanians.

2 June 1970
World Cup group match at the Jalisco Stadium, Guadalajara

Geoff Hurst
Hurst grabbed the winner in 1970
England overcame a resistant Romania in the heat of Mexico winning 1-0 in front of 50,000 people.

This was a good opening World Cup game for the reigning champions and West Ham United's Geoff Hurst grabbed the only goal after 64 minutes.

15 October 1980
World Cup qualifier at the 23 August Stadium, Bucharest

Romania 2-1 England

After England had destroyed Norway 4-0 in their opening qualifying game for the Spanish World Cup in 1982, they were unable to repeat their heroics against Romania.

Raducanu scored first for the Romanians after 35 minutes but Tony Woodcock scored his second goal in the qualifying games with 26 minutes remaining.

English hearts were broken with Iordanescu scoring the winner from the penalty-spot after 75 minutes.

29 April 1981
World Cup qualifier at Wembley Stadium, London

England 0-0 Romania

As it turned out, this was a vital point for England over the Romanians in the quest for a place in the 1982 World Cup.

England strikers Trevor Francis and Tony Woodock could not convert their chances but the defence held firm under the guidance of goalkeeper Peter Shilton to claim a goaless draw.

England packed their bags for the finals instead of Romania.

1 May 1985
World Cup qualifier at the 23 August Stadium, Bucharest

Romania 0-0 England

England had scored 13 goals in their opening two qualifying games for the Mexican World Cup in 1986 but struggled against the Romanians.

England vs Romania
Their first encounter was in May 1939
They have played each other 10 times
Both teams have won twice against each other
There have been six draws
This was the second goaless draw in a row between the two nations with the attacking options of John Barnes, Trevor Francis and Paul Mariner failing to capitalise.

A young Gheorghe Hagi was also starting to make an impression on the international stage against England.

11 September 1985
World Cup qualifier at Wembley Stadium, London

England 1-1 Romania

This game was one of four England draws in eight qualifying matches for the Mexico World Cup.

Glenn Hoddle opened the scoring after 25 minutes but Camataru equalised on the hour, but England went on to head the group to, once again, deny the Romanians a qualifying place.

12 October 1994
Friendly at Wembley Stadium, London

England 1-1 Romania

England and Romania seem intent on drawing their games together.

Ilie Dumitrescu gave Romania the lead on the half hour but Newcastle United's Rob Lee drew the sides level after 55 minutes with a lunge at the back post.

22 June 1998
World Cup group match at the Municipal Stadium, Toulouse

England 1-2 Romania

Michael Owen
Will Owen score against Romania again?
England and Romania both opened the French World Cup with victories and this game ultimately decided who finished top of the group.

Just two minutes after the interval Viorel Moldovan fired Romania into the lead after linking up well with Hagi.

Michael Owen was finally brought on and made an immediate impact scoring the equaliser with seven minutes remaining.

Dan Petrescu ensured England played Argentina in the quarter-finals with a last-gasp goal after Graeme Le Saux could not tackle his Chelsea team-mate.

England need to avoid defeat against Romania to progress in this year's European Championship.
