Emerich queries added time
![]() Costinha scores his last-gasp winner for Portugal
Romania coach Emerich Jenei questioned the time-keeping of referee Gilles Veissiere after Portugal's winner deep in stoppage time.
The fourth official indicated four minutes of added time after Romania and Portugal had ground out 90 goalless football Arnhem. But the Group A game was into its 96th minute when Portuguese sub Costinha headed home Luis Figo's free kick. Jenei said: "Unfortunately we lost in the last second, maybe even after the last second because the ref showed four minutes but four minutes was over.
"The game could have been a draw but, don't forget, we met a strong team who had already beaten England. Revenge Jenei added: "Perhaps it is revenge because two years ago in Porto we won in the last second." Portugal boss Humberto Coehlo admitted: "This time we had Lady Luck on our side. "Romania are very tough opponents and were tactically close to perfection."
A booking for Gheorghe Hagi means the inspirational Romanian captain is suspended for Romania's game against England. So, the defeat will prove to be the last in a major finals for the 35-year-old, who picked up his first yellow card of Euro 2000 against Germany, if his country do not qualify for the quarter-finals. Jenei said: "Hagi won't be in the game against England but it doesn't mean he won't play football again."
