Dutch wear down Denmark
Denmark 0-3 Holland
(Rotterdam: Attendance 50,000)
Holland secured their place in the quarter finals of Euro 2000 - but were made to fight all the way by well-organised Denmark.
Three goals in 20 second-half minutes saw the Dutch power through after Denmark had threatened to upset the odds in a goalless first half.
Patrick Kluivert broke the Danish resistance on 58 minutes and substitute Ronald de Boer added the second eight minutes later.
Boudewijn Zenden completed a hat-trick of goals from Barcelona players with the third 12 minutes from time.
The Danes, also beaten 3-0 by France, saw a miserable night completed when Michael Schjonberg fired a penalty wide in the 80th minute.
The result left the Dutch and the French with six points and in the quarter finals, while the Danes and the Czechs are the first two teams to go out.
The Dutch were keen to put on a show having failed to impress in their opening group game against the Czech Republic.
But it was the Danes who had the first chance of the game, midfielder Martin Bisgaard poking in a shot that failed to trouble Edwin van der Sar.
The Danes were unlucky again on 24 minutes as Bisgaard surged his way down the Dutch left and, having beaten Edgar Davids on the by-line, crossed low into the six-yard box.
Edwin van der Sar parried the ball and Bisgaard's instinctive shot was only kept out by the prostrate body of team-mate Allan Nielsen.
But Overmars should have put the blue-shirted Dutch ahead on the half-hour but,
reacting to a mistake by Peter Schmeichel, watched his volley dribble the wrong side
of a post.
That prompted the Dutch into action and only a superb reaction block from Schmeichel denied Davids after a neat build-up on 37 minutes.
But the Danes had the last word of the first half, Thomas Gravesen desperately unlucky to see his curling chip shave the top of the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.
Denmark threatened again two minutes into the second half, but Jesper Gronkjaer fired into the side netting after bursting into the Dutch penalty area.
But the Dutch made the breakthrough on 57 minutes when Schmeichel could only parry a clever effort from Dennis Bergkamp, and the ball fell kindly for Kluivert to cooly sidefoot home.
The goal visibly deflated the Danes, who fell further behind when a superb low cross from Zenden was finished off at the far post by Ronald de Boer.
Zenden completed the Dutch demolition when he finished clinically after a blistering run and low cross from Michael Reiziger.
The Danes knew they were on their way home with a game still to play and they even wasted their chance of a consolation after van der Sar sends Sand crashing, only for Schjonberg to drag his shot wide.
Van der Sar was substituted after picking up an injury in giving away the foul, making him a doubt for the group decider with France.
But that was the only worry Holland had on a night of celebration.
