Seven arrested after fans clash
![]() Swedish and Turkish fans clash in Eindhoven
Seven fans were arrested after fighting broke out between Swedish and Turkish fans ahead of their Group B game in Eindhoven.
Police say four Swedes and three Turks were arrested, while a police officer was slightly injured following a 10-minute missile exchange. Fans began throwing cans and bottles after a Turkish supporter had attempted to drape his nation's flag on a statue in the town's main square. Around 30 riot police quickly appeared and a 90-minute stand-off followed before fans began to disperse.
Police denied reports that some of those involved were English fans in Swedish shirts.
Police spokesman Johann Beelen insisted: "That is not true.
We have no information that English people were involved.
"I don't want to say the Swedes started it or the Turks started it. We will investigate that." He added: "The trouble lasted barely 10 minutes out of a whole day. It's a shame but the atmosphere is now fine." Police estimated 10,000 Turkish fans and 6,000 Swedish supporters had come to the southern Dutch city for the match. Only half-strength beer is on sale in bars in Eindhoven but fans had reportedly been stocking up with alcohol at supermarkets.
