Veteran actress Sue Johnston has collected her OBE - for her services to drama and charity- from the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

The 65-year-old is best known for her role as Barbara Royle in BBC One's The Royle Family and Sheila Grant in Channel 4 soap Brookside.

But the star said she did not think the Queen was a fan of The Royle Family.

"I doubt she watches it - I bet William and Harry do though, but I don't think it would be quite her thing," she said.

She said I managed to combine acting work with charity and I said I liked to be able to give something back

The Warrington-born actress added that she and the Queen had discussed her charity work during the ceremony which includes raising money for Francis House Children's Hospice in Manchester.

She has also helped to raise money for Haringey Shed, a theatre project for young people with disabilities.

"She said I managed to combine acting work with charity and I said I liked to be able to give something back," Johnston said.

The actress, who has also appeared in Inspector Morse, Waking The Dead and British film Brassed Off, said her late parents would have been more proud of the honour than any of her acting successes.

"When I got the letter I got quite emotional because I wanted to tell my parents and I couldn't," she said.

"Of all the things I've done this would have been the best for them."
