Orchestra sells conductor's slot
Sakari Oramo

A chance to conduct the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) is being offered to the highest bidder.

The opportunity to receive tuition from CBSO music director Sakari Oramo is being auctioned on internet site eBay.

The winning bidder will then direct the 90-piece orchestra. The auction ends on Friday, with bidding already passing the 5,000 mark.

The charity auction proceeds will go towards an education and community programme in the Midlands.

The successful bidder will conduct a rehearsal at Birmingham's Symphony Hall, with the opportunity to pick their favourite piece of music.

Despite the prestige of the CBSO the winner does not need to have any experience of conducting or classical music.

Finnish maestro Oramo - who joined the orchestra in 1998 - will give a one-hour lesson before the conducting session.

The auction is billed as "a once in a lifetime" chance to discover the mysteries of being in control of the conductor's baton.
