Spamalot takes US critics awards
Spamalot
Spamalot has enjoyed sell-out shows since opening in March
Monty Python musical Spamalot has won four US Outer Critics Circle Awards, including best Broadway musical.

Based on film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it also took awards for director Mike Nichols, actress Sara Ramirez and costume designer Tim Hatley.

Doubt, John Patrick Shanley's drama about a nun's suspicions about a parish priest, was named best Broadway play.

The Outer Critics Circle is an organisation of US journalists and critics who write outside New York.

Doubt stars Cherry Jones and Brian F O'Byrne were named best actress and actor, while the play's director Doug Hughes was also honoured.

Solo honour

The best actor in a musical award was won by Norbert Leo Butz for his turn in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, while Victoria Clark won the best actress in a musical category for The Light in the Piazza.

Altar Boyz was awarded best off-Broadway musical.

Judges could not decide between Neil LaBute's Fat Pig and Lee Blessing's Going to St Ives in the off-Broadway play category, so they split the prize between the two.

Billy Crystal's one-man show 700 Sundays, in which he delves into his own life experiences, was named best solo performance of the year.

The awards will be handed out at a ceremony in New York on 26 May.
