Steps 'Stomp' to the top
Pop group Steps have scored their
second number one with Stomp.
The fivesome went straight in at number one knocking U2 off the top spot and down to third place after one week. In at number two are Baha Men with Who Let The Dogs Out - which climbed up from No 14 the previous week. Samantha Mumba made it to number five with Body II Body. All Saints top the album charts with Saints And Sinners, with US rockers Limp Bizkit in second place.
Video awards for UK A British version of the US Blockbuster Awards is to be launched, giving movie fans the chance to pick their top videos of the year. Video bosses hope the British Video Awards will become an annual event with thousands voting in categories such as best film, comedy or kids movie. A shortlist will be drawn up next month with voting forms available at record and video shops and superstores. The winners will be announced in January.
Gilliam in fantasy move deal Terry Gilliam - director of Brazil and The Fisher King - has been signed up to make a fantasy film called Good Omens, says US trade paper Variety. Based on a story co-written by sci-fi author Terry Pratchett, it is the story of an angel and a demon in search of the anti-christ. Gilliam - a member of the Monty Python team - will begin filming in the UK towards the end of 2001. The project is backed by the UK's Renaissance Films.
Happy birthday ET A new line of toys has been created to mark the 20th anniversary release of E.T. the Extra Terrestial in 2002. Director Steven Spielberg has been working with Toys R Us to develop ET merchandise for a new generation. "This is a remarkable opportunity to extend the special appeal that ET has achieved in our lives," said Spielberg. The anniversary edition of the film will include previously unseen footage and new computer-generated effects. Keating takes on Pogues' hit Singer Ronan Keating is working on a version of The Pogues' hit, Fairytale of New York, for the B-side to his new single, The Way You Make Me Feel. The track, featuring a duet by Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl, made it to number two in Christmas 1987 despite poor airplay due to bad language. Keating is thought to have amended the words for his version of the track, often cited as a pop masterpiece. The single is released in November. Indian trip for comedy crowd Goodness Gracious Me are jetting off "back to where they came from" to film a one-off special. Meera Syal, Nina Wadia, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Kulvinder Ghir are heading to India to create a special edition of the hit comedy show, to be screened next year The special will be filmed in Delhi, Agra and Mandawa and will feature regular characters decamping to India. The "very British" Coopers will leave England for a Swiss skiing holiday, but end up in India after a run of mishaps.
