Sir Elton leads Wembley farewell
![]() Wembley will host one more major event
Sir Elton John is to host a farewell charity concert at Wembley Stadium just hours before the bulldozers move in.
The singer will lead a special celebrity concert, featuring sporting and musical heroes with links to the famous stadium.
Organisers are hoping the event will raise £1 million for the NSPCC Full Stop Campaign. Mark Wood, Chief Executive of AXA UK, which is organising the event, said: "Music has played a huge part in Wembley's history and Sir Elton's presence will ensure that music as well as sport lives on in Wembley's memory." Tha famous old stadium, built in 1923, is no stranger to rock concerts.
Queen, U2 and Sir Elton John were among those international stars to perform at Live Aid. It is not yet known if Sir Elton will perform at the concert or is simply hosting the event. A list of performers and sporting personalities taking part is expected to be released soon. The new Wembley stadium is due to open in 2003.
