Eminem was a winner at the MTV awards
Controversial rapper Eminem is back in court on Tuesday, facing charges of alleged assault.

The MTV award winner is facing a possible jail sentence if found guilty of assaulting a man in the car park of a bar.

He's like any other defendant for us

The singer is still facing legal action from his grandmother, for using his dead uncle's voice in a song, and his mother, for defamation.

Recently, he and his estranged wife Kimberly Mathers reached a settlement over a $10m (6.8m) legal action filed by her over lyrics to a song.

Eminem is accused of pulling an unloaded handgun on a man whom his wife kissed in the parking lot of a nightclub.

Police say he hit the man, John Guerra, with the gun.

Prosecutor Carl Marlinga said the Grammy-winning rapper could be imprisoned, if convicted.

"He's like any other defendant for us in terms of the economic consequences of his actions,'' Marlinga said.

Rapper rivalry

"He's charged with a felony, and we intend to go to trial with this case as a felony.''

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III, could get up to five years in prison.

He also has a criminal trial pending following an alleged clash with a rival band.

He is alleged to have threatened Detroit duo Insane Clown Posse with a gun on the same weekend in June prosecutors claim he assaulted John Guerra.

In June Eminem reached an agreement with his estranged wife to share custody of the couple's five-year-old daughter Haile Jade.

He also pledged to continue giving financial support to Kimberly Mathers, providing a driver for her and returning her credit cards.
