David hopes for Mobo magic
Craig David
Garage music's shining star: Craig David
Teenage pop star Craig David leads the nominees for Wednesday night's Music of Black Origin Awards in London.

The 19-year-old from Southampton, who has had a phenomenal year of chart success, has six nominations - the highest number for one artist in the event's five-year industry.

Jamelia
Jamelia is another Mobo high-flyer
His collaborators, production team Artful Dodger, took four nominations, as did R 'n' B singer Jamelia and garage performer MJ Cole.

The Mobos were set up in 1995 by jazz and soul singer Kanya King as a ceremony for black-inspired genres which would be equal of the Brit Awards. This year's nominees were announced in Las Vegas last month, and the ceremony takes place at Alexandra Palace, north London.

David's six nominations are a tribute to the Southampton singer's rapid rise to fame. He shot to number one in November 1999 performing vocals on Artful Dodger's club anthem Rewind, and his next two solo singles, Fill Me In and 7 Days, did just the same.

Beverley Knight at the 1999 Mobos
Singer Beverley Knight was last year's big winner
His nominations include two mentions in the best single category for Fill Me In, and another collaboration with Artful Dodger, Woman Trouble.

David is due to perform at the awards along with Sade, Gabrielle and US act Sisqo.

Artful Dodger's other nominations include best producer and best UK newcomer - in which Mark Hill and Pete Devereux compete against MJ Cole.

Jamelia has a chance of success in the best video and best UK single categories for Money.

Reggae legends Aswad are due to collect an outstanding achievement award at the ceremony, which will be shown on Channel 4 on Thursday evening.

BBC Choice's Liquid News will be broadcasting live from the Mobos at 2030 BST/ 2130 GMT.
