Jackson to address Oxford Union
Jackson: Boteach says his commitment to children is "incredibly inspiring"
Pop superstar Michael Jackson is to give a speech on child welfare at the Oxford Union.
The 42-year-old singer - who was investigated for alleged child abuse in 1993 - will jointly address the debating society with his new mentor Rabbi Shumley Boteach. The date for Jackson's visit has yet to be confirmed.
However, negotiations between the singer and the Union are currently taking place. It is hoped that a firm arrangement will be set before the end of the autumn term. The union's 21-year-old president Richard Silcock said he and his members were "thrilled" to host Jackson's first public lecture. "He will be speaking on the subject for which he is universally recognised, his profound dedication to the welfare of the world's children," he stressed. Silcock added: "He has been a music legend for the past three decades and has devoted much of his life to helping children." Boteach, winner of The Times Preacher of the Year Award, is said to be advising Jackson on the contents of the speech. The two are close friends and Boteach described Jackson's commitment to children as "incredibly inspiring". He added: "There is hardly an individual in the world more devoted to the prioritisation of children than Michael. "He is a great humanitarian, a phenomenal father to his two children, and a creative genius who's artistry has redefined music in our time." Jackson will join a long list of celebrities who have addressed the Oxford Union, including Jerry Hall, Jerry Springer and Stella McCartney.
