Eminem files for divorce
Eminem
Eminem has been married just over a year
Rap star Eminem has filed for divorce from his wife, five weeks after she attempted suicide.

The controversial Grammy-winning artist split with school sweetheart Kimberly Mathers two months ago, after just a year of marriage.

He is seeking joint custody of the couple's four-year-old daughter, Haile Jade, after casting doubts over his wife's fidelity.

Eminem's lawyer Harvey Hauer said: "There remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved."

The 27-year-old performer, real name Marshal Mathers III, has had an eventful year.

His second album, The Marshal Mathers LP, and its lead single The Real Slim Shady topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and earned him the title of the world's biggest rapper.

But in June he was twice arrested and charged over alleged firearms offences.

The first incident involved the alleged pistol-whipping of a man he said was kissing his wife, while the second concerned a row with a member of rival band Insane Clown Posse.

Tears

In July, Kimberly, 27, tried to kill herself at the couple's Detroit home while her husband was on tour.

Her lawyer, Neil Rockind, said she had stayed in the marriage for the sake of their daughter.

But he told the Detroit Free Press: "There is no reason for her to shed too many tears over a relationship with somebody who obviously does not want her around."

Eminem's publicist Denis Dennehy said he had filed for divorce because of concerns over his wife's fidelity.

And in the last week, Eminem's mother, Debbie Mathers-Briggs, has taken further legal action against him for defamation.

He was also forced to call off his UK shows this summer because of the impending court appearances.

Eminem was due to play at festivals in Reading and Leeds later this month, but was told he was not allowed to leave America.
