Daryl itching to fill Monroe role
Daryl Hannah
Hannah may appear naked on stage
Hollywood star Daryl Hannah is coming to the London stage to revive the role made famous by Marilyn Monroe in The Seven-Year Itch.

The 39-year actress - best known for her role as a mermaid in Splash - will take the lead in a West End version of the play which inspired the movie classic.

Like fellow US stars Nicole Kidman, Kathleen Turner and Jerry Hall before her, Hannah may also appear naked on stage.

Daryl Hannah will not be recreating Marilyn Monroe's famous pose

But she will not be recreating the famous scene where Monroe's white dress blows over her face as she stands over a grate.

The play sees the stage debut of Oscar-nominated British director Michael Radford, whose films include Il Postino and White Mischief.

Based on George Axelrod's original Broadway production, it tells the tale of a middle-aged man who fantasises about the girl next door when his family leave him to go on holiday.

Producer Laurence Myers said of Hannah: "This was a conscious decision to bring a talented star to the London stage."

He explained that Radford had just finished a film starring Hannah - Dancing at the Blue Iguana - and was singing her praises.

Myers pointed out that the play was quite different from the Monroe movie, but had not decided whether to incorporate nudity.

"The original play on which the film was based was a lot raunchier, a word we don't use much nowadays, because in it the two main characters slept together and there was talk of virginity.

"We are not talking stage orgies. This is just a play in the course of which a couple sleep together.

The actress got herself in a spin for a BHS ad campaign

"In Dancing at the Blue Iguana, Daryl plays a stripper, and as part of her research for the role she actually went out and got a job as a stripper, so she has no problem with nudity.

"I haven't brought her over here to be naked on stage. She's a wonderful comedy actress, but if the play requires her to appear naked she won't have a problem with that."

Myers said the famous skirt scene from the 1955 Hollywood comedy had been cut out because it was not part of the original play.

"Daryl is not a Monroe impersonator," he insisted.

The official opening night of the Seven Year Itch is 9 October at the Queen's Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue.
