Pop legend David Bowie's wife Iman has given birth to a daughter, called Alexandria Zahra Jones.

The 53-year-old's spokesman said he assisted with the delivery by cutting the umblical cord.

He said the baby was born in the United States at "0506 local time" on Tuesday, but refused to give a more precise location.

"Both parents are of course overjoyed," he added.

The 7lb 5oz baby is Bowie's second child, and his first with Iman, 45.

His first child is 29-year-old Duncan Jones, born Zowie Bowie to his former wife Angie. He originally changed his name to Joe before settling on Duncan.

He is now a film student in London.

Iman has a 22-year-old daughter, Zulekah.

Last year, Bowie said he and his wife wanted a baby "more than anything else in the world".

The London-born singer burst into the limelight in the late 1960s, and quickly built up a reputation as one of rock music's most innovative performers.

In recent years he has left his wild past behind him and settled down with Iman, who he met in 1990 and married eight years ago.

His fascination with new technology saw him become one of the first performers to make use of the internet, and recently saw him launch his own internet service provider.

Born Iman Abdulmajid in Somalia, Iman was spotted in Kenya after her family fled their homeland following a coup. She became one of the most popular models of the late 1970s, and was one of the first to accquire the tag "supermodel".

She has also acted and launched her own make-up range.
