A request by Cher's child Chaz Bono to change his name and gender following sex change surgery last year has been granted by a Los Angeles judge.

The 41-year-old writer, activist and reality TV star, who was born Chastity Sun Bono, is now officially a man and has a new name - Chaz Salvatore Bono.

"Chaz couldn't be happier," said his attorney Kristina Wertz in a statement.

Chaz Bono is a gay rights campaigner who appeared on the American version of Celebrity Fit Club in 2006.

The name Chastity came from the title of a film his mother made with her first husband Sonny, who died in a skiing accident in 1998.

Wertz, of the Transgender Law Center, said the granting of her client's petition was "an important step in his transition".

The court order, she said, would allow Bono "to change a variety of his identity documents to show who he truly is".

Bono revealed last June he had undergone gender reassignment surgery, calling it "the best decision I've ever made".

At the time, Cher promised to support her child on his "difficult journey" and said she would "strive to be understanding".
