Status Quo 'escape from Moscow' as flights grounded

Rockers Status Quo have embarked upon an arduous trek from Russia to London after their flights home were cancelled due to the volcanic cloud.

The band have been stranded since playing a concert in Moscow last week.

Now they have set off on a 1,100 mile journey to Hamburg, Germany, where a tour bus is waiting to take them home.

"After all we've been through... I never thought that our touring schedule would be threatened by a volcano," frontman Francis Rossi told the Mirror.

So far, the band have not had to cancel any shows.

Their press agent told the BBC the band had "missed flights before but this is bigger than its ever been".

Satellite solutions

Several gigs and entertainment events have been affected by the travel chaos, which is now entering its sixth day.

The world premiere of Iron Man 2 has been moved from London to Los Angeles, and concerts by bands including LCD Soundsystem, Crystal Castles and Damian Marley have been cancelled or postponed.

Chris Moyles, who is stuck in New York, presented his Radio 1 breakfast show by satellite on Tuesday morning, having missed Monday's edition entirely.

The programme opened with a parody of the A-Team, with a voice-over declaring that his "team now exist as international soldiers of entertainment".

Meanwhile, teen star Miley Cyrus has been fulfilling promotional duties for her new film The Last Song from California.

She had been due to land in London this week for the film's premiere - but is instead speaking to journalists by satellite and telephone.

The actress and singer told GMTV she had gone into the recording studio during her unexpected sojourn at home.

And many British artists who played the Coachella music festival in California over the weekend are still unable to get home.

Among them are Damon Albarn's hip-hop collective Gorillaz, who are due to play an ambitious series of shows at London's Roundhouse next week.
