Comedian Michael McIntyre is to host the 2010 Royal Variety Performance, it has been announced.

McIntyre, 34, has already performed at the event twice before and becomes the youngest ever host.

The comic, who hosts the BBC's Comedy Roadshow, said: "It is such an honour and I'm unbelievably excited."

The Royal Variety Performance takes place at London's Palladium theatre in December and will be attended by the Prince of Wales.

The full line-up for the annual gala will be announced in due course.

Katie Taylor, head of BBC entertainment and events called McIntyre "a brilliantly lively and infectious glue that will hold the Royal Variety Performance together".

The comedy Roadshow returns to BBC One later this year for a second series.

His live DVD, Hello Wembley, became the fastest-selling stand-up DVD of all time in 2009.
