Actor Charlie Sheen has pleaded not guilty to domestic violence charges at a court in Colorado and has been ordered to stand trial on 21 July.

Mr Sheen, 44, was arrested while on holiday in Aspen, Colorado, on Christmas day last year.

His wife, Brooke Mueller Sheen, told police at the time he put a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.

The star of TV show Two and a Half Men is charged with menacing, criminal mischief and assault.

Ms Mueller Sheen has previously said that she wants the charges dropped. Her lawyer, Yale Galanter, confirmed on Monday that this was still the case.

Mr Sheen said nothing during his brief appearance in Pitkin County district court.

He was charged under his legal name, Carlos Estevez.

The plea was entered by his lawyer, Richard Cummins.

Third marriage

"Charlie is looking forward to the opportunity to clear his name," said Sheen's agent, Stan Rosenfield.

At the time of the alleged assault, Mr Sheen denied threatening his wife with a knife. He told officers they slapped each other on the arms and that he broke two pairs of her glasses, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Within a week of Mr Sheen's arrest, lawyers for both husband and wife said the couple wanted to reconcile.

On February 8, a judge agreed to modify a restraining order that kept them from contacting each other.

The couple have twin boys, who were born in March last year.

Mr Sheen - the son of actor Martin and brother of actor-director Emilio Estevez - married, for the third time, in May 2008. It followed an acrimonious divorce from actress Denise Richards in 2006.

The actor was named America's highest paid TV star in 2008.

He is expected to return to work on CBS's Two and a Half Men on Tuesday.
