Hurt Locker dominates the Oscars

Here are some of the most notable quotes from the 82nd Academy Awards, which have been held at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles.

HOSTS STEVE MARTIN AND ALEC BALDWIN ON OSCAR VOTING
Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin

Steve Martin: "Everyone wants an Oscar but they're very hard to get."

Alec Baldwin: "That's right, Steve. Ballots are sent out to 6,000 members of the Academy..."

Martin: "...And then they mark their ballots, and they are tabulated by PriceWaterhouse..."

Baldwin: "...And then, no matter what, they nominate Meryl Streep."

Martin: "Meryl Streep holds the record for most nominations as an actress. Or, as I like to think of it, most losses."

SANDRA BULLOCK - BEST ACTRESS (THE BLIND SIDE)
Sandra Bullock

"Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?

"Gabby [Sidibe - fellow nominee], I love you so much. You are exquisite. You are beyond words to me.

"Carey [Mulligan], your grace and your elegance and your beauty and your talent... makes me sick.

"Helen [Mirren], I feel like we are family through family and I don't have the words to express just what I think of you. And Meryl [Streep], you know what I think of you... and you are such a good kisser.

"Everyone who's shown me kindness when it wasn't fashionable, I thank you. To everyone who was mean to me when it wasn't... George Clooney threw me in a pool years ago. I'm still holding a grudge."

KATHRYN BIGELOW - BEST DIRECTOR (THE HURT LOCKER)

"This really is... There's no other way to describe it, it's the moment of a lifetime.

"I would not be standing here if it wasn't for Mark Boal, who risked his life for the words on the page and wrote such a courageous screenplay that I was fortunate enough to have an extraordinary cast bring that screenplay to life.

"And I'd just like to dedicate this to the women and men in the military who risk their lives on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan and around the world. And may they come home safe. Thank you."

JEFF BRIDGES - BEST ACTOR (CRAZY HEART)
Jeff Bridges

"Oh! Thank you, Academy members! Mom and dad, yeah, look! Whoo!

"Thank you, mom and dad, for turning me on to such a groovy profession. Oh, my dad and my mom, they loved showbiz so much. I remember my mom, getting all of us kids to entertain at her parties. You know, my dad sitting me on his bed and teaching me all of the basics of acting for a role in Sea Hunt.

"They loved showbiz so much and I feel an extension of them. You know, this, this is honouring them as much as it is me."

NEIL PATRICK HARRIS - OPENING SONG

"I'm Neil Patrick Harris. I know: What am I doing here?"

MO'NIQUE - BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS(PRECIOUS)
Mo'Nique

"First, I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics.

"I want to thank Miss Hattie McDaniel for enduring all that she had to so that I would not have to.

"Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey because you touched it, the whole world saw it.

"To my amazing husband Sidney, thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forego doing what's popular in order to do what's right. And baby, you were so right. God bless us all."

HOSTS STEVE MARTIN AND ALEC BALDWIN ON THE NOMINEES

Steve Martin: "Who doesn't love Sandra Bullock? Well tonight, we may find out."

Martin: "Look, there's that damn Helen Mirren."
Alec Baldwin: "Steve, that's Dame Helen Mirren."

Martin: "And right there in the front row is Meryl Streep. Anyone who has ever worked with Meryl Streep always ends up saying the exact same thing: "Can that woman act?" And, "What's up with all the Hitler memorabilia?"

SANDY POWELL - BEST COSTUME DESIGN (THE YOUNG VICTORIA)

"Wow. Well, I already have two of these. So I'm feeling greedy. I'd like to dedicate this one to the costume designers that don't do movies about dead monarchs or glittery musicals. The designers that do the contemporary films and the low-budget ones actually don't get as recognised and they should do, and they work as hard. So this is for you, but I'm gonna take it home tonight. Thank you."

TINA FEY AND ROBERT DOWNEY, JR - PRESENTING BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Tina Fey and Robert Downey, Jr

Fey: "Great movies begin with great writing."

Downey Jr: "What does an actor look for in a script? Specificity, emotional honesty, catharsis."

Fey: "And what does a writer look for in an actor? Memorising. Not paraphrasing. Fear of ad-libbing."

Downey Jr: "Actors want scripts with social relevance; warm weather locations; phone call scenes that can be shot separately from that insane actress that I hate; and long, dense columns of uninterrupted monologue."

Fey: "And we writers dream of a future where actors are mostly computer generated and their performances can be adjusted, by us, on a laptop. Alone."

Downey Jr: "It's a collaboration. A collaboration between handsome, gifted people and sickly little mole people. Here are the nominees for best original screenplay."

CHRISTOPH WALTZ - BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR(INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS)
Christoph Waltz

[On receiving his statuette from Penelope Cruz]

"Oscar and Penelope that's an uber-bingo!

"I always wanted to discover some new continent and I thought I had to go this way, and then I was introduced to Quentin Tarantino, who was putting together an expedition that was equipped by Harvey Weinstein and Lawrence Bender and David Linde, and he put this script in front of me and he said, 'This is where we're going, but we're going the other way.'

"So Brad Pitt helped me on board and... Quentin, with his unorthodox methods of navigation, this fearless explorer, took this ship across and brought it in with flying colours and that's why I'm here.

"And this is your welcoming embrace and there's no way I can ever thank you enough, but I can start right now. Thank you!"

PETE DOCTER - DIRECTOR, BEST ANIMATED FEATURE (UP)

"Boy, never did I dream that making a flip book out of my third grade math book would lead to this.

"It was an incredible, incredible adventure making this movie, but the heart of it came from home. And to our families, in my case, to my wonderful parents, they were so supportive. My kids, Nicholas and Ellie, and my amazing wife Amanda, you guys are the greatest adventure. Thank you."

HOSTS STEVE MARTIN AND ALEC BALDWIN ON THE CEREMONY

Alec Baldwin: The Academy Awards: The biggest night in Hollywood since last night.

Steve Martin: Ladies and gentlemen, this show lasts so long that Avatar now takes place in the past.

RYAN BINGHAM - BEST ORIGINAL SONG (THE WEARY KIND - CRAZY HEART)

"I'd like to thank my wife Anna, I love you more than rainbows, baby."
