Jennifer and Brad tie the knot
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Pitt and Aniston have been together for nearly two years
Hollywood stars Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt have got married in a private ceremony estimated to be costing $1m.

Some 200 guests were invited to the wedding, held as the sun set over the Pacific Ocean.

The wedding was held at the estate of television executive Marcy Carsey in Malibu, California.

However, Jennifer's mother was not there - because of a long-running dispute with her daughter.

Nancy Aniston, 60, has said she fell out with her daughter in 1996 when she made some comments on an American tabloid TV show about Jennifer's hair.

After the show was broadcast, she said her daughter phoned and screamed: "I will never forgive you".

Mrs Aniston has recently written a book, called "From Mother and Daughter to Friends: A Memoir",

The guests included Jennifer's co-stars in the TV sitcom "Friends".

Actress Cameron Diaz was also there.

Pitt, 36, and Aniston, 31, have been together for almost two years. He proposed to her on millennium eve.

Speculation that they were about to tie the knot has been in the air for several months but the anticipation only reached fever pitch last week.

The intense interest in the couple's union is not surprising since it brings together two of Hollywood's hottest names.

Brad Pitt has been on the leading men A-list since he rose to fame as Geena Davies' six-packed love interest in the movie Thelma and Louise.

His role as a sexually charged hitchhiker was relatively minor. However, his good looks ensured he grabbed the attention of both the audience and the industry's decision-makers.

As a result, he has gone on to prove he is more than just a pretty face.

Police ensured that there was tight security for the event, with airspace over the site restricted to prevent helicopters with photographers disturbing the ceremony.

Privacy was further guaranteed by a large white tent erected on the Malibu cliffs,

An estimated $75,000 was spent on flowers, and another $20,000 on fireworks.

Part of the Pacific Coast Highway was shut down to accommodate the guests and workers.

He has starred in a run of high profile and acclaimed dramas such as The River Runs Through It, blockbuster horror thriller Seven and most recently the controversial Fight Club.

Jennifer Aniston, on the other hand, has made a number of largely unremarkable outings on the big screen including She's The One and Picture Perfect.

But the actress remains engrained in the public's psyche as the ditzy Rachel in the long-running hit series Friends.

Gwyneth Paltrow
Paltrow reportedly got fed up with waiting for Pitt to pop the question

The sitcom about the trials and tribulations of a group of close-knit young people in New York has made global household names of Jennifer Aniston and co-stars Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt Le Blanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer.

The popularity of the series was at one point so high that Jennifer Aniston sparked a hair fashion craze as women rushed to adopt the style known simply as a "Rachel".

She has since become the frontwoman to the hair products campaign of leading cosmetics company L'Oreal.

But despite living their individual lives in the spotlight, as a couple they have done their best to keep things under wraps.

They shun publicity and rarely appear out together.

Rather more perhaps is known about their previous relationships. Jennifer Aniston was with actor Tate Donovan for two years.

Brad Pitt has dated Robin Givens - the ex-Mrs Mike Tyson - and had a three-year relationship with actress Juliette Lewis.

Most notably, however, he was previously engaged to Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow. She reportedly dumped him "for not setting a date".
