Former US teen star Leif Garrett has been released on bail after he was arrested at a US underground station for allegedly possessing heroin.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said officers approached Garrett, 48, when they saw him "shaking and sweating" on the platform.

A search revealed drugs in his shoe. He is due in court on 24 February.

Garrett appeared in films including 1983's The Outsiders, alongside Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Tom Cruise.

A spokeswoman for Garrett did not comment.

In 2006, the actor - who made several films in the 1970s and 1980s and released 10 albums - was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years of probation after opting out of a drug treatment programme.

He had originally been placed on the programme, as an alternative to prison time, over cocaine charges.
