Pop star Lady GaGa walked the red carpet at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles wearing a silver solar system gown created in collaboration with Giorgio Armani.

Lady GaGa then opened the ceremony with a spectacularly filthy performance with Sir Elton John.

Country singer Taylor Swift was overjoyed to win best country song and best female country vocal performance but struggled to keep hold of her four trophies backstage.

Michael Jackson's children Paris and Prince Michael accepted a lifetime achievement award on behalf of their father, alongside their cousins and singer Lionel Richie.

Beyonce thanked husband Jay-Z in her acceptance speech. The couple earned nine Grammys in total between them.

Rihanna sparkled on the red carpet with Jay-Z (left) and Katy Perry. She appeared a year on from her assault by boyfriend Chris Brown, which happened before last year's Grammy ceremony.

Singer Katy Perry arrived with her fiance, comedian Russell Brand.

Pink took part in a spectacular performance, singing while suspended above the stage.

Singer-songwriter Imogen Heap was one of the few British winners, picking up best engineered non-classical album for Ellipse.

The Black Eyed Peas appeared to be auditioning to become a new troupe of pop superheroes during their performance.

US rap star T-Pain had a taste of success and performed with Jamie Foxx and former Guns n Roses guitarist Slash.

Composer Michael Giacchino, who wrote the music for the Pixar film Up, listened closely to his pair of Grammy gramophone trophies.

Green Day were jumping for joy after beating AC/DC, U2 and Eric Clapton to win best rock album.

French DJ David Guetta had five nominations and won best remix for his hit When Love Takes Over.
