Kathryn Bigelow has become the first female director to pick up the main prize at the annual Directors Guild of America (DGA) awards, which are seen as a pointer to Oscars success.

She won for her Iraq war drama, "The Hurt Locker."

The event was also notable for the appearance of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the first time the couple have been seen in public together for some time.

Brad Pitt paid tribute to Quentin Tarantino in the audience, who directed him in "Inglorious Basterds".
