Some of the biggest names in sport have appeared on the programme

A Question Of Sport is to celebrate its 40th birthday in January with a special episode, it has been announced.

The anniversary makes it the longest-running sports quiz in British TV history, the BBC said.

Presenter Sue Barker and team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell will mark the occasion on Friday 8 January.

Barker, who has been the show's regular presenter since 1997, said: "It's a pleasure and a privilege to work on such a fantastic programme."

Some of the biggest names in British and international sport have appeared on the programme since its early days.

Michael Johnson, Laura Davies, Pat Cash and David Coulthard will participate in the landmark show.

Executive producer Caroline Roberts-Cherry said: "Everyone currently working on the production of this most-loved show is thrilled to be part of such a landmark anniversary."
