What is Handel's Messiah enduring appeal?

It's 250 years since Handel died but his sacred masterpiece Messiah is still remarkably popular.

In the run up to Christmas more than 400 choirs across Britain will be performing the famous Hallelujah chorus.

So why does it strike such a chord with musicians and audiences alike?
