Two women have been injured after seven bulls being used in a new film starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz escaped from the set in Spain.

The women were hurt when the animals broke free from the set in Cadiz and ran through the streets before being captured on a nearby beach.

Filming was to begin on Knight and Day on Monday, but it has now been suspended until further notice.

Cruise and Diaz were not on set at the time of the incident.

The pair are expected in the town next weekend to begin filming their scenes in the action comedy.

"Nothing will be filmed in Cadiz until we have a new plan that guarantees the safety of local residents," a spokesman for the city's mayor told the Diario de Cadiz newspaper.

The film's Spanish producer Calle Cruzada said he did not know how the bulls managed to escape.
