The concert was the first of two to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Stars including Sting, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen had fans on their feet for most of a five-hour Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert in New York. Stevie Wonder wept as he performed the late Michael Jackson's The Way you Make Me Feel at the 25th anniversary gig at Madison Square Garden. Other inductees who performed included Simon and Garfunkel and James Taylor. U2 and Aretha Franklin are among acts playing at the venue for a further hall of fame celebration on Friday night. Eric Clapton was due to play the concert, but pulled out after undergoing surgery to remove gallstones. His place has been taken by Jeff Beck.
Paul Simon paid tribute to the late George Harrison

On a night that featured a number of collaborations, Wonder performed on stage with John Legend, Jeff Beck, BB King and Smokey Robinson. One of the night's biggest ovations came when Art Garfunkel joined Paul Simon on stage to perform Bridge Over Troubled Water. Simon had earlier dedicated a performance of Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles to the late George Harrison, who he called "a man who I truly loved and admired greatly". Crosby, Stills and Nash and Bonnie Raitt also performed. Springsteen brought proceedings to a close by playing a two-hour set which featured a collaboration with Billy Joel. The evening ended with a performance by Springsteen - with help from the other acts - of Jackie Wilson's (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher. The proceeds from the two concerts will go towards permanent funding for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and Museum, established in 1984 by Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun who died in 2006.
