Singer Lavigne files for divorce

Canadian singer Avril Lavigne has filed for divorce from her musician husband Deryck Whibley after three years of marriage, according to court records.

The 25-year-old cited "irreconcilable differences" in the papers filed at a Los Angeles court.

Lavigne, who announced last month she was splitting from the Sum 41 frontman, has asked for a ruling to block Whibley from receiving spousal support.

The couple started dating in early 2004 and married in July 2006.

Writing about the split on her website, Lavigne said: "I admire Deryck and have a great amount of respect for him.

"I am grateful for our time together and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship."

The singer burst to fame with her 2002 debut album Let Go.

Songs from her fourth album, due out in November, have been produced by Whibley.
