Lennon's Liverpool homage top song
![]() Lennon (right) and McCartney: Two songs in the top ten
John Lennon's homage to his home city of Liverpool - In My Life by The Beatles - has been chosen as the greatest song ever written in a magazine poll.
The track, which appears on the 1965 Rubber Soul album, was chosen by songwriters including Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Jerry Leiber and Hal David. Another Beatles song, Sir Paul McCartney's 1966 ballad Here, There And Everywhere, was at number four. Sir Paul was on the panel, put together by Mojo magazine. Each writer was asked to choose their own personal top ten - with the former Beatle choosing three of his band's songs, including Here, There And Everywhere. Lennon and McCartney's 1960s rivals, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, figure at number two in the poll with (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Over The Rainbow, by Harold Arlen and EY Harburg - sung by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, was third. The Mojo top 10 - with the artists who made the songs famous: 1. In My Life - The Beatles 2. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Rolling Stones 3. Over The Rainbow - Judy Garland 4. Here, There And Everywhere - The Beatles 5. Tracks of My Tears - The Miracles 6. The Times, They Are A-Changing - Bob Dylan 7. Strange Fruit - Billie Holliday 8. I Can't Make You Love Me - Bonnie Raitt 9. People Get Ready - The Impressions 10. You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - The Righteous Brothers
