Talking Shop: Adele

Grammy-winner Adele has recently returned to the UK to work on the follow up to her number one album 19.

The 21-year-old singer spent this summer touring the United States, where her album peaked at number 11 in the Billboard charts.

While she was there, she also performed on Saturday Night Live and featured in the US edition of Vogue magazine.

She spoke to BBC 6 Music at last night's BMI awards in London, where her track Chasing Pavements was honoured.

So you've got a new album on the way?

I have, I'm writing it at the moment, slowly but surely.

Is there a bit of pressure this time?

I'm not being rushed, because you're only as good as your next record. If you get rushed, you can lose that little niche that you've created for yourself, whereas if you take your time then you'll end up delivering.

Obviously I'm a bit scared that there's new avenues that I want to go down with the sound, but I don't want to leave behind my lovely fans who might not like the new sound. So I'm a bit wary of that.

Who are you going to be working with?

There have been quite a few offers, but I'm trying to do it on my own. I'm going to go and write with Eg [White] again just because we've got a bond. I have a producer - but I don't really want anyone to know who it is in case it flops.

What kind of sound are you going to go for?

I'm more interested in having a body of work rather than a mish-mash of sounds. I think my first album was a bit of pop, a bit of R&B, a bit of jazz, a bit of wannabe rock and a bit of indie folk. I've been listening to a lot of Sade at the moment. I bought all these amazing iconic albums and I'm trying to work out why they have a sound. I've been listening to a lot of Back to Black too. I want an Adele sound.

I'm not into collaborations because I think I ruin them

Are you enjoying being back in the UK?

I love being home. I've just bought a flat in Battersea for me and my mum. I moved out and tried to flee the nest, but I couldn't do it and she couldn't either. I have a dog called Louis Armstrong, a dachshund, and I like taking him for walks.

What was it like appearing in American Vogue? Are there any plans to get you in UK Vogue?

I'm not sure, I'd like to be. I love Anna Wintour, she dressed me and I was really drunk and I was trying to make her remember me, and she didn't really. She saw me and she was like, "who is that?" She worked it out after a while.

You have sung with Jack Penate and Jack White in the past, is there anyone else you would like to duet with?

I'd be interested in doing songs but I'm not into collaborations because I think I ruin them. I'd love to sing with people live rather than on record.

Robbie Williams?

Oh yeah, would love to. I love a bit of Robbie.

Any good records you've been listening to lately?

Melanie Fiona. She does that song "Give it to me Right". Yeah, I've been listening to that album.

Adele was speaking to BBC 6 Music reporter Julie Cullen.
