Vacation sequel 'in the pipeline'

Chevy Chase
It is not known if Chevy Chase will reprise his role as Clark Griswold

US film studio New Line is planning a follow-up to the 1983 comedy National Lampoon's Vacation, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The film will focus on Rusty Griswold, the son of Chevy Chase's character and now a father in his own right, planning his own family road trip.

Chase could return as grandfather Clark, though no deal is yet in place.

Shanghai Knights and Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin is reportedly attached to the project.

In the original film, Chase played a parent intent on taking his family across country to the Walley World amusement park.

Short story

Beverly d'Angelo, Randy Quaid and supermodel Christie Brinkley also appeared, with Anthony Michael Hall as the young Rusty.

The late John Hughes scripted the movie, which went on to spawn four sequels involving the accident-prone Griswold clan.

Hughes reportedly based the film on a short story he wrote for the satirical magazine National Lampoon about a family trip to Disneyland.

The director and screenwriter, known for such films as The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, died in August at the age of 59.
