Joe Godwin has a 20-year career in children's media

One-time BBC trainee Joe Godwin has been appointed director of BBC Children's, leading the department's move to its new Salford home.

Godwin has spent the past 20 years working in children's media including producing Blue Peter and spending five years at Nickelodeon.

He is currently head of news, factual and entertainment for the department.

He will start in November 2009, replacing Richard Deverell who moves to BBC North as chief operating officer.

Joe Godwin, who first joined BBC Children's 20 years ago as a trainee, said: "I can't think of a more exciting challenge, or greater honour, than to lead the brilliant people who make CBeebies and CBBC."

Godwin started his career at the BBC in 1986 and spent five years at Nickelodeon before returning in 2005.

As well as producing shows including Blue Peter he directed Going Live and Live & Kicking. He has also headed up Children's BBC continuity.
