Tom Cruise braved thousands of screaming fans at the première of his latest film Mission: Impossible 2.

The Hollywood actor did a 25-minute walkabout, greeting crowds and signing autographs in London's Leicester Square.

He even made one fan's day by grabbing their mobile phone and chatting to one of their friends.

The actor, who turned 38 on Monday, wore shades as he happily exchanged words with bystanders, many of whom were chanting his name.

About 3,000 people turned up for a glimpse of Cruise, who is expected to make about £70m for his return role as Ethan Hunt, much of it through a profit deal on the film's takings.

Cruise said he was delighted to meet so many fans.

He said: "I just like people - I love to go out and meet them. It's a great audience in Britain. I have a great time when I'm here."

The actor did all the stunts for the picture himself and said it was "all part of the challenge" of the film.

"It added to the suspense if people could see it was really me. Some of it's nerve-wracking, but I felt confident," he said.

Other guests at the event included Cruise's co-star Dougray Scott, Gladiator actor Russell Crowe and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie.

Pregnant British actress Thandie Newton - Cruise's love interest in the film - also appeared, prowling the crowd in a flowing purple gown.

Also at the screening were broadcaster Chris Evans, and singers Ronan Keating and Kylie Minogue.

Model Caprice delighted waiting photographers by turning up in a revealing leather top and leather flared and tasselled trousers over high-heeled leopard print boots.
