British saxophonist Courtney Pine has received a lifetime achievement award at the Brecon Jazz Festival.

Pine, hailed for the wide influences which shape his music, received the award at the festival in Wales from First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan.

Peter Florence, director of Brecon Jazz, said few had done more for jazz in the UK than Pine.

The saxophonist, who lives in London, is also proficient with the clarinet, flute and keyboards.

Mr Florence said: "Few have done more for jazz in Britain than Courtney, and this award is an acknowledgement of his remarkable career to date, and it will be exciting to see what other projects he has planned for the decades to come."

The festival is celebrating its 26th anniversary with international jazz performers appearing in a variety of events until Sunday.
