Hughes' memorable film moments

Film director and writer John Hughes, who has died at the age of 59, made some of the most successful comedy films of the 1980s and 1990s.

Here is a look at some of his best-loved movies, which have endured as cult classics.

THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985)

Plot summary: Five high school students - all with very different interests - spend a Saturday together in detention. The characters - typical US school stereotypes including the jock, the prom queen and the nerd - do not get on at first.

But after spending time together, the group put aside their initial hostilities and realise they have more in common than initially thought.

Characters and cast: Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez), Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy), Richard Vernon (Paul Gleason), Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall), John Bender (Judd Nelson) and Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald).

FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (1986)

Plot Summary: High school student Ferris Bueller decides to play truant.

He makes his best friend Cameron skive too, and persuades him to "borrow" his father's Ferrari.

Together they hatch a plan to get Ferris's girlfriend Sloane out of class to join in with their high jinks.

Characters and cast: Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick), Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara), Ed Rooney (Jeffery Jones) and Jeanie Bueller (Jennifer Grey).

WEIRD SCIENCE (1985)

Plot summary: In an attempt to be liked by their peers, teenagers Gary and Wyatt create their idea of a "perfect" woman via computer.

Their creation, named Lisa, comes to life and attempts to help the boys make more friends and become popular.

She creates situations which help boost their confidence before leaving, appearing at the end of the film as an unlikely high school gym teacher to a group of stunned boys.

Characters and cast: Gary Wallace (Anthony Michael Hall), Lisa (Kelly LeBrock) and Wyatt Donnelly (Ilan Mitchell-Smith).

PRETTY IN PINK (1986)

Plot summary: Fashion lover Andie Walsh is a not-so-popular teenager at high school, who falls for rich boy Blane McDonough.

They start dating, but Andie is embarrassed by her humble background and finds her friends do not agree with her relationship.

Her best pal Duckie harbours feelings for her, but remains loyal until the end.

Characters and cast: Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald), Jack Walsh (Harry Dean Stanton), Duckie (Jon Cryer), Iona (Annie Potts) and Blane McDonough (Andrew McCarthy).

Killer quote: "I know I'm old enough to be his mother, but when the Duck laid that kiss on me last night, I swear my thighs just went up in flames! He must practice on melons or something." - Iona.

HOME ALONE (1990)

Plot summary: It is chaos in the McAllister household as the family prepare to travel to Paris to celebrate Christmas.

A family argument causes eight-year-old Kevin to storm off and spend the night in a part of the house he never sleeps in.

After accidentally leaving without him, Kevin wakes the next morning to find his family are nowhere to be found. Believing he has made them disappear, Kevin revels in no longer having to answer to anyone, until a pair of burglars attempt to rob his house, and he sets out to defend his home.

Characters and cast: Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), Harry (Joe Pesci), Marv (Daniel Stern) and Peter McCallister (John Heard).
