UK Love Parade gets go-ahead
![]() Purple haze: Clubbers go for it at the Berlin Love Parade
BBC Radio 1's Love Parade event in Leeds this weekend has been given the go-ahead after worries it could be cancelled over safety fears.
It is estimated up to 500,000 people could attend the event, but West Yorkshire police claimed they had not been provided with enough detail about safety and security arrangements.
Safety measures at all festivals are being looked at more closely in the wake of the tragedy at Roskilde in Denmark last Friday when eight music fans were crushed to death. Now, after a series of meetings, a spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said the force's concerns had been addressed. "The decision is subject to final on-site meetings, but there are normal procedures for the final approval of an entertainment licence." All police leave in West Yorkshire has been cancelled for the event in Roundhay Park, which is expected to attract between 100,000 and 500,000 people. The event has already been switched from Leeds city centre to allow for the crowds.
Among the top DJs due to play at the 24-hour party are Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules, Pete Tong and Seb Fontaine.
Radio 1's head of live music Matt Priest said: "We are delighted the Love Parade will go ahead as planned with the full agreement of the council and the police." The Love Parade originated in Berlin 10 years ago and has since been established as an annual street festival which regularly attracts more than three million people. Clubbers at the Leeds event have been promised 24 hours of non-stop dance music, beginning at 1300 BST on Saturday. |
