Federer has won Wimbledon six times

Roger Federer's epic win over Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon men's tennis final drew a peak audience of 11.2 millon viewers on BBC One on Sunday.

The figure represented 57% of the audience share at 1825 BST as the fifth set reached its climax.

The match, which lasted more than four hours, was watched by an average audience of 7.2 million.

Federer won a record-breaking 15th Grand Slam title. It was the third time Roddick had lost a Wimbledon final.

Family final

But the figures were eclipsed by last year's ratings - when Rafael Nadal beat Federer in another five-set thriller, when the peak audience was 12.7 million.

Nadal did not take part in this year's competition because of injury.

The ladies' final between sisters Serena and Venus Williams on Saturday was watched by a peak audience of 4.2 million, with the match averaging 3.4 million viewers.

Serena beat Venus to win her third Wimbledon title.
