Meg and Dennis split up
Ryan and Quaid
Ryan and Quaid are splitting up after nine years of marriage
Hollywood couple Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid are breaking up after nine years of marriage.

The split between Ryan, 38, and Quaid, 46, was described as "mutual and amicable" by their publicist, who would not say if they planned to divorce.

Quaid and Ryan have an eight-year-old son, Jack, and have been considered one of Hollywood's most enduring and supportive couples.

They married on Valentine's Day in 1991 but had met four years earlier on the set of Joe Dante's 1987 comedy adventure Innerspace.

Quaid played a hell-raising Navy test pilot and Ryan his love interest. At the time, both Quaid and Ryan were involved with other people.

Ryan was with actor Anthony Edwards, currently of ER fame. Quaid was with Lea Thompson, star of Caroline in the City.

Careers

They met again a year later on the set of another movie - the thriller DOA - and started a relationship.

Describing what she liked about Quaid, Ryan said: "I like the way he sees the world. Sometimes I just ask him what he's looking at. And it's fun, just that."

They appeared onscreen together again in the 1993 film Flesh and Bone.

Hanging Up
Ryan was last seen this year in Hanging Up with Diane Keaton

Since Ryan's appearance in the 1990 box office smash When Harry Met Sally, her career has gone from strength to strength.

Quaid's, on the other hand, has been steadily on the wane.

She has become one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, starring in hits such as You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle and Hanging Up.

Quaid, however, has made few appearances on the big screen, although he can currently be seen in Frequency and taking a supporting role in Traffic.

Ryan is currently working in London on the kidnap thriller Proof of Life, in which she stars with Gladiator heart-throb Russell Crowe.

The two have been seen out and about together in the centre of town. On Tuesday night, they also attended a special one-off David Bowie gig at the BBC's Broadcasting House in London.
