Film star Jane Fonda has undergone surgery to have her left knee replaced.

The 71-year-old wrote on her blog before the operation that it had been "a strong faithful knee", and entitled her post "so long old knee".

The actress also expressed fears of being left with a prominent scar after seeing Liza Minnelli's operation marks at the Tony Awards earlier this year.

Fonda, who was famed for her fitness videos during the 1980s, had a hip replacement operation in 2005.

'Girlhood scabs'

She also wrote in her blog posting that she would miss her knee, and that former husband, French film director Roger Vadim, liked to kiss both of them.

"For years I ran on it and skiied. I am remembering the girlhood scabs from falls off my bike. The splinters and bruises," said Fonda.

Her website also featured a photograph of her knee prior to surgery, which had the initials of her surgeon written above it.

Fonda, whose numerous film credits include 9 to 5, The China Syndrome and Barbarella, won two Oscars for Klute and Coming Home.

Earlier this year, she made her comeback to the Broadway stage after an absence of 46 years.
