Patrick Swayze's police drama The Beast will not return for a second season, cable network A&E has announced.

The series, which premiered in January, starred the Dirty Dancing star as a veteran FBI agent in Chicago.

The 56-year-old filmed the 13-part series, which drew in an average of about 1.3 million viewers, despite battling pancreatic cancer.

A&E president Bob DeBitetto called the series "a labour of love" and hailed Swayze's passion and tenacity.

The actor, who is best known for starring alongside Demi Moore in the 1990 hit movie Ghost, went public with his diagnosis last year.

He refused painkillers while working on the show and only took a day-and-a-half off filming.

Since then he has described undergoing chemotherapy as "hell on wheels" and has been forced to deny reports of his death.

Earlier this year, he revealed he may only have two years to live and said beating the disease was "pretty wishful thinking".

He is now working on his memoirs.
