Singer Natalie Cole is "resting comfortably" after undergoing a kidney transplant, her publicist had said.

Maureen O'Connor said the 59-year-old daughter of Nat King Cole had decided to postpone her summer tour, set to begin in June, as she recovers.

Last month, she told US talk show host Larry King that she faced a lifetime of dialysis after both her kidneys failed following treatment for hepatitis C.

Hundreds of fans contacted the show offering to donate organs to the star.

However, she did not have to take any of them up on their offer after a suitable donor was found through an organ-procurement agency.

'Heartfelt optimism'

The Grammy-award-winning singer was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 2008.

At the time, she said she was ready to "meet this challenge with a heartfelt optimism and determination".

Cole attributes her hepatitis C to years of drug use. The performer was addicted to heroin, LSD and cocaine before going into rehab in 1984. Sharing needles is one of the ways the disease can be passed on.

The singer underwent an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy and weeks afterwards she said: "I couldn't breathe. Literally, my kidneys stopped functioning.

"They stopped processing the fluid that was starting to build up in my body."

Before the transplant, she required dialysis three times a week, but still continued to perform.

She won her ninth Grammy in February for Still Unforgettable and recently appeared on American Idol.

"I'm committed to working. I'm a fighter, not a chump," she said in an interview with People last year.

"The timing is intense. The album is special to me, and here I am sick. But you know the saying: These are the best of times and the worst of times. So we'll barrel through."
